BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Senior captain
Brooke Moloney-Kolenberg scored the game-winning goal in overtime and the No. 6 nationally ranked Bates field hockey team survived a spirited challenge from the University of New England to prevail 3-2 Wednesday night at Blue Bolt Field.
It's the second straight season the Bobcats (10-2) and the Nor'easters (9-6) have played an overtime game, with Bates winning 2-1 last year in Lewiston.
The Bobcats dominated the extra session, but failed to convert on their first two penalty corner opportunities. In the 66th minute, the third time proved to be the charm. Senior
Summer Gordon (North Andover, Mass.) delivered the insert to Moloney-Kolenberg (Winchester, Mass.) at the top of the circle and the team's leading scorer weaved through the defense before firing a shot into the back of the cage for her seventh goal of the season and second game-winner.
All five goals occurred off penalty corners on Wednesday, with the Bobcats striking first in the 37th minute. Junior
Amy LaBelle (Barrington, R.I.) delivered the insert to Moloney-Kolenberg at the top of the circle and she found junior
Elena Agosti (North Andover, Mass.) on the left side. Agosti ripped a shot that deflected off a Nor'easter into the cage for her first goal of the season and the second of her career.
But UNE responded in the 49th minute, as the fourth quarter turned into a high-scoring affair. Abby Stevens inserted the ball to Makena Valentine and she scored from straight on to tie the game at one.
Bates grabbed the lead again in the 54th minute, as first-year
Ameera Dhillon (Surrey, British Columbia) delivered the insert on a penalty corner to sophomore
Rose Gordon (North Andover, Mass.) at the top of the circle and Gordon was able to deliver a shot into the cage for her second goal of the season.
Rather stunningly, the Nor'easters answered almost right away, with Stevens turning in a tremendous effort in the 56th minute off a penalty corner where she delivered the insert. She got the ball back, took a shot that was denied by sophomore goalkeeper
Ava Donohue (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.) and followed it up with another shot that found the top left corner, tying the game at two.
Neither team tallied a shot after that and the Bobcats controlled the seven-on-seven overtime period.
Overall, Bates tallied 18 shots to just four for UNE. Eight Bates shots were on goal to three for the Nor'easters. The Bobcats tallied seven penalty corners, scoring on three, while UNE recorded three penalty corners, scoring on two.
Greta Jennison recorded five saves for the hosts while Donohue notched one for Bates.
The Bobcats are back in action this Saturday when they host Connecticut College and celebrate Senior Day at Campus Ave. Field. The game gets underway at 11 a.m., with Senior Day ceremonies shortly before starting lineup introductions.
