LEWISTON, Maine -- Connecticut College used a balanced attack to sweep Bates College, 3–0 (25–21, 25–14, 25–23), in NESCAC volleyball action Friday night at Alumni Gym.
Trailing 17-15 in the opening set, the Camels strung together six straight points to grab a 21-17 advantage. Bates responded with a 4-0 run to tie it at 21-all, but Conn. College closed out the frame with four consecutive points to take the early lead.
After dropping the second set 25-14, the Bobcats surged ahead 13-8 in the third before the Camels rallied with six straight points to move in front, 14-13. Tied again at 15, Conn. built a 20-15 cushion with another five-point burst, only for Bates to answer with five of its own to even things at 20.
The teams traded late runs—four points for the Camels and three for the Bobcats—before Rae Wartelle's match-best 14th kill sealed the sweep for the visitors.
Wartelle powered the Camels (8–7, 1–4 NESCAC) on .385 hitting to go with four service aces and three total blocks. Zoe Watts added nine kills, while setter Aubrie Letourneau ran the offense with 35 assists and chipped in seven digs and three aces.
Bates (7–7, 1–5 NESCAC) was led by Sofia Castiglioni's eight kills on .300 hitting, while Malina Young added six kills (.308) and five digs. Setter Lauren Croom tallied 17 assists and five digs. Ellie Asada topped the team with 10 digs.
The Bobcats look to regroup Saturday afternoon with a 1:00 p.m. NESCAC home match vs. Trinity College.
