STANDISH, Maine -- Senior
Tife Agunloye tallied a brace thanks to a pair of successful penalty kicks and sophomore
Benny Bogyo scored a goal in his collegiate debut as the Bates men's soccer team rolled to a 3-0 win over Saint Joseph's College of Maine Wednesday night, earning
Ben Brewster his first victory as a collegiate head coach.
Bates (1-0) grabbed the early lead in the 25th minute of action. A bad pass in their own end by the Monks (0-2-1) landed on the foot of Agunloye (Monroe, Conn.) in the outer part of the box, and he got tripped from behind, setting up a penalty kick. The Bobcats' leading scorer from a year ago did not disappoint, slipping the ball into the lower right side of the net for a 1-0 edge for Bates.
The visitors wasted little time adding to the lead, with Agunloye earning another penalty kick opportunity in the 28th minute. With the Bobcats on defense, sophomore
Noah Greiff (Washington, D.C.) secured the ball and delivered a terrific pass down field where Agunloye was waiting on the far side. He took the ball into the box and got tripped again, setting up another penalty kick. This time he sent the ball into the lower left side of the net for a 2-0 Bates advantage.
The Bobcats capped off the scoring in the 74th minute. Senior
Rex Ah Chu (Flower Mound, Texas) delivered a throw-in from the near side and Greiff redirected the ball expertly with his head to a waiting Bogyo (Redwood City, Calif.) on the far side of the box. Bogyo went top shelf and one-timed it home for his first collegiate goal. The sophomore walked on to the team last spring, earning a roster spot, and took full advantage of his first chance to wear the garnet and white in a match.
First-year goalkeeper
George Nassar (Newtonville, Mass.) earned the shutout in his collegiate debut, playing all 90 minutes and making a pair of saves. The Bobcats tallied 17 shots, with five on goal, while the Monks finished with 10 shots, two on goal.
Bates is back in action on Saturday when the Bobcats open NESCAC play against Trinity. The match is set for 3 p.m. at Garcelon Field.
