LEWISTON, Maine -- The future certainly looks bright for Bates College women's soccer as three first-years carried the Bobcat offense in Tuesday's 4-1, season-opening victory vs. Husson University on Garcelon Field.
Two goals from
Isabelle Bernal (San Francisco, Calif.), along with a tally each by
Gwyn Jamison (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) and
Eleanor Martin (Oilville, Va.), accounted for the scoring as the Bobcats move to 1-0 to start the campaign.
Jamison netted the first score of the year at the 5:11 mark when, after a Bates corner kick, the first-year played a little back-and-forth with senior
Mollie Franklin (Framingham, Mass.) before depositing a liner into the right side of the Husson frame from about 15 yards out.
Just 3:33 later (8:44), Franklin headed a pass to a darting Martin, who would proceed to lace a shot into the lower left.
Bernal made it 3-0 Bobcats in the 40th minute (39:33), controlling a feed from sophomore
Rachel Suh (Bellevue, Wash.) and depositing a shot across the Husson box into the net.
Husson (0-2) snapped the shutout at 43:05 as senior Kate Harriman (Glenburn, Maine) played a leading pass from senior Natalie Aviolla (Hudson, Fla.) and poked home her first goal of the year for the Eagles (0-2).
The Bobcats' fourth-and-final tally of the night was as nifty as they come as Bernal back-heeled flip a cross in front of the Husson goalmouth at 79:15 to seal the triumph. Suh earned her second helper of the night on the play.
"It's always great to get the first game under the belt, and to play a good, quality team is helpful," said Bates head coach,
Joe Vari. "It's exciting that we can get goals from different players, and a positive first step as we prepare to open NESCAC competition this weekend."
Despite the result, Husson outshot its host, 19-14. Bates, however, owned a slight 9-8 edge on frame. Senior
Ruby Reimann (Oak Bluffs, Mass.) recorded the goalkeeping win for the garnet and white, recording seven saves in the complete-game performance.
Madison Weigler (Manchester, N.H.) pocketed five saves in 90 minutes for Husson.
Bates (1-0) returns to the pitch this Saturday at noon on Garcelon Field when they host Trinity College (0-1) in the NESCAC opener for both squads.
