MIDDLETOWN, Conn -- A penalty kick goal by Wesleyan's Caty Clements in the 75th minute proved to be the deciding factor in Saturday NECAC women's soccer action as the host-Cardinals held off visiting Bates College, 1-0.
Wesleyan remains unbeaten with the victory and improves to 4-0 (2-0 NESCAC) on the year. The Bobcats (1-1 NESCAC) experience their first setback after kicking off the campaign with a 3-0-1 mark.
Despite being on the wrong end of an 11-1 shot differential in the first half, the Bates defense managed to keep the ball out of its net as the conference foes played 45:00 of scoreless soccer. The 0-0 stalemate would be erased at 74:46 when Wesleyan's senior captain took full advantage of a Bobcat infraction and booted in what would prove to be the game-winning PK.
The victors finished with a 16-2 shot surplus (5-1 on frame) and a mighty 13-0 advantage from the corner.
Molly Brumbach (90:00, one save) collected the goalkeeping decision for the Cardinals.
Ruby Reimann recorded four saves in the complete-game effort for the road team.
Bates now returns to campus to host Maine Maritime Academy in non-conference action Monday evening (6:30 p.m.) on the brand-new synthetic surface of Russell Street Track & Field.
