CLINTON, N.Y. -- In a contest that spread across a two-day span, Hamilton College defeated Bates College, 5-0, Monday to close out the 2023-24 campaign for the Bobcats.
After rain required a suspension of Sunday's in-progress match at Bates' Wallach Tennis Center, the event was moved to Hamilton where the two squads picked up where they left off. Switching to a postseason scoring format (first team to five points) for the remainder of the contest, the Continentals swept doubles play, and earned victories at No. 3 and No. 6 singles to clinch the team win.
Doubles results include:
1) Hannah Apsey/Stephanie Pratt (Hamilton) vs.
Ally Friedman/
Iris Westmoreland (Bates): 8-0
2) Priyanka Challapalli / Hannah Walpole (Hamilton) vs.
Julia Anderson/Liv Gidlow (Bates): 8-7 (8-6)
3) Grace Qian / Samantha Rainero (Hamilton) vs.
Grace LaFountain/
Ava Steinberger (Bates): 8-2
In singles action, Hamilton's Shannon Cicero upended Westmoreland at No. 3 by the scores of 7-6 (7-2), 6-0. Qian topped the Bobcats'
Ava Lyon at No. 6 (6-3, 6-0).
With the win, the Continentals (7-8, 3-7 NESCAC) clinch the No. 8 seed in the upcoming NESCAC Championship Tournament and will take on top-seed Wesleyan in the quarterfinals this Friday. The Bobcats end the year at 4-13 (1-9 NESCAC).
