GREENE, Maine -- The Bates rowing team turned in a dominating performance and the Bobcats won their 11th consecutive President's Cup Regatta Sunday morning on the Androscoggin River.
Bates won eight of the 10 races held Sunday against rivals Colby and Bowdoin, with the University of Maine also competing in one of the events. The Bobcats combined to score 27 points, while Bowdoin and Colby tallied 13 points apiece.
"I'm very pleased with both teams today," head coach
Peter Steenstra said. "This race marks the end of our regular season schedule and a very challenging week of training and racing. They showed a lot of grit today, something we'll need plenty of as we enter the championship portion of our season."
The morning of racing began at 9 am with the women's novice four. Led by first-year coxswain
Sarah Wallace (Fairfield, Conn.) and first-year stroke
Charlotte Comrack (Washington, D.C.), the Bobcats won the four-boat race in 7:25.1, beating runner-up Bowdoin (7:40.6) by open water.
Then the men's novice four took to the water, and the Bobcats won again. Led by first-year coxswain
Darien Chiang (Quincy, Mass.) and first-year stroke
Lando Putnam-Bagley (Medford, Mass.), Bates raced to the finish in 6:42.8, easily beating runner-up Colby (7:00.0) in the four-boat race, which also included the University of Maine, by open water.
The men's varsity four race proved to be one of the most exciting of the day. Led by junior coxswain
Izzy Beck (Upper Montclair, N.J.) and sophomore stroke
George Fauver (Bedford, N.Y.), the Bobcats won the race in dramatic fashion, outracing runner-up Bowdoin 6:29.3 to 6:30.1.
Bates entered a pair of boats in the men's third varsity eight race against Bowdoin, with the 3V, led by sophomore coxswain
Micah Shimizu (Methuen, Mass.) and junior stroke
Ben Auerbach (Greenbrae, Calif.), winning in 6:08.8. The 4V, led by sophomore coxswain
Melinda Kostrinsky (Miami, Fla.) and first-year stroke
Finian Guinney (Seattle, Wash.), took second in 6:51.4, well-ahead of Bowdoin (7:06.4).
The top two eights for the women's and men's teams were up next. Led by senior coxswain
Oli Seline (Delaware, Ohio) and Comrack in the stroke seat, the Bates women's second varsity won their two-boat race with Bowdoin in 6:51.7. The Polar Bears crossed the finish line in 7:03.7.
With Chiang at coxswain and senior captain
Andrew Frey (Berkeley, Calif.) at the stroke seat, the Bates men's second varsity eight crossed the finish line first in a time of 6:08.9, beating runner-up Colby in the three-boat race by seven seconds.
As she has all year, Beck coxed the men's first varsity eight, and Fauver manned the stroke seat. With a tailwind making the race quite fast, the Bobcats won a tight one over runner-up Colby in 5:41.5. The Mules crossed the finish line in 5:41.5 while Bowdoin was far back, finishing in 6:05.1.
Led by senior captain coxswain
Lucy Del Col (Wellesley, Mass.) and first-year stroke
Cal Dagner (Crozet, Va.), the Bates women's first varsity eight concluded the morning with a convincing win, racing to the finish in 6:39.9 to defeat Bowdoin (6:50.7) and Colby (7:12.5).
The Bobcats are back in action this Saturday when they travel to Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass. for the New England Rowing Championship.
