CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The Bates men's rowing second varsity won their race against the MIT heavyweights in a terrific performance Saturday on the Charles River, highlighting a strong morning of competition for the Bobcat rowing teams against the Engineers.

"It was a beautiful day on the Charles and the MIT parents put on an outstanding BBQ complete with bagpipes for entertainment," head coach Peter Steenstra said. "Can't thank them enough."

Led by first-year coxswain Darien Chiang (Quincy, Mass.) and senior captain stroke seat Andrew Frey (Berkeley, Calif.), the Bates men's second varsity eight raced to the finish in 6:26.9, with the Engineers crossing the line in 6:29 in the three-boat race. The Bates 3V recorded a time of 6:36. 

"Racing went well as this was a tough race at the end of a long week of training but everyone performed at a high level," Steenstra said. "It was great to see the 2V row through MIT with 500 meters to go. A great performance!"

The Bobcats are back in action Sunday when they host the President's Cup Regatta at the Traquina Boathouse in Greene, Maine.
