LEWISTON, Maine -- Bates College, hosting a NESCAC doubleheader for the second consecutive day, welcomed Wesleyan University to Lafayette Street Field for a twin-bill carrying major postseason implications for both squads.
Prior to first pitch, the Bobcats honored lone senior, 1B
Rachel Liazos, with a touching senior day ceremony on the diamond, one that included a number of her family members.
Once action was underway, it would be the visiting Cardinals that would come through in the clutch as the visitors swept the garnet and white by scores of 2-1 and 3-1.
GAME ONE
Starting pitcher Isabella Secaira-Cotto helped herself at plate in a big way as the junior, batting in the top of the fourth, smashed a two-out, two-run double to right field, bringing around the only two tallies Wesleyan would need en route to the 2-1 victory.Â
The contest opened with three scoreless frames before Scaira-Cotto snapped the stalemate with her game-winning knock. The Bobcats plated its lone run in the home half of the fifth, courtesy of a
Kennedy Jones ribbie single to deep center.
Secaira-Cotto (8-5) scattered seven hits, yielding a walk and striking out one, en route to the complete-game win.
Delaney Rankin falls to 6-8 with the setback, striking out a career-high 10 batters in the complete-game effort for the Bobcats.
GAME TWO
Two runs in the third, followed by a lone score in the sixth, proved to be more than enough for Wesleyan to escape Lewiston with the softball sweep.
Rapping eight total hits in the game, RF Lizzie Marino (2-for-4, R) and P/3B Kelly Baker (2-for-4, RBI) each enjoyed multi-hit performances for the victors. A
Zariya Anderson sacrifice fly in the home half of the third inning accounted for the Bobcats' tally.
The aforementioned Baker (ND) started in the circle for Wesleyan (3.0 IP,1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 1 K) before being relieved by Ella DeCrescenzo (1-1) to start the fourth. The right-hander went on to fire four scoreless frames (4.0 IP, 4 H), earning the first-year her first collegiate win (1-1).
Isabella Albro (2-9) went distance for the Bobcats.
With the pair of victories, Wesleyan (6-8 NESCAC, 15-15 overall) soars to the seventh spot in the conference standings. The Bobcats (8-19, 5-11 NESCAC), currently in ninth-place, find themselves on the outside looking in at the moment.
Bates will next host Husson University this Thursday at 3:00 p.m. for a non-conference set.
