CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The men's second varsity eight beat Trinity and the MIT lightweights, the women's second varsity eight tied the Radcliffe Lightweights, and the women's varsity four beat Trinity, highlighting a fun morning of racing Sunday for the Bates rowing teams on the Charles River.
Meanwhile, both the women's and men's first varsity eights placed less than two seconds behind NESCAC foe Trinity in their respective races.
"Coming out of exam week both teams put down some focused, determined, and gutsy performances to close the gap on all the Trinity crews from the week earlier," head coach
Peter Steenstra said. "Things are coming together nicely."
While the women's second varsity eight finished just over five seconds behind Trinity, they tied the Radcliffe Lightweights. Led by senior coxswain
Oli Seline (Delaware, Ohio) and first-year stroke
Charlotte Comrack (Washington, D.C.), the women's 2V raced to the finish in 7:32.8, finishing in a literal dead heat with the boat from Harvard.
The second varsity eight also provided the highlight of the day on the men's side. Led by first-year coxswain
Darien Chiang (Quincy, Mass.) and senior captain stroke
Andrew Frey (Berkeley, Calif.), the men's 2V won their race in 6:25.5, edging Trinity (6:27.2) and easily beating the MIT Lightweights (6:42.0).
The day ended on a high note with first-year coxswain
Sarah Wallace (Fairfield, Conn.) and first-year stroke
Sula Harf (Brooklyn, N.Y.) leading the varsity four to an open-water win over Trinity, out-racing the Bantams 9:13.1 to 9:28.1.
The Bobcats are back in action this Saturday when they take in the MIT heavyweights.
