#4 Tufts Tough Against Bobcats as Jumbos Secure 23-5 Win in NESCAC Women's Lacrosse

MEDFORD, Mass. -- Coming off its first loss of the season, a 17-15 setback Saturday at No. 8 Wesleyan, Tufts University took out its frustration vs. visiting Bates College Wednesday as the No. 4 Jumbos jumped the Bobcats for a season-high 23 goals, resulting in a 23-5 NESCAC women's lacrosse victory.

Leading 5-2 after the first quarter of action, Tufts (11-1, 6-1 NESCAC) unloaded for a 10-0 showing in the second frame to carry a mighty 15-2 cushion into the half. With the final outcome all but decided, the Jumbos commanded the second half, 8-3, to cruise to the triumph.

12 different Jumbos found the back of the net in the contest as the home team out-shot its guest, 45-17 (36-11 on frame). Four players recorded four or more points in the win, including Ella Lesperance (Jr.-Wayland, Mass.) with eight points (4 G, 4 A), Margie Carden (Jr.-Newtown Square, Pa.) with six (4 G, 2 A), Allie Zorn (So.-Bedford, Mass.) with five points (3 G, 2 A), and Schuyler Lloyd (Fy.-Wenham, Mass.) with four (3 G, A).

Genna Gibbons (Jr.-Menlo Park, Calif.) and Emily Leschin (Fy.-San Mateo, Calif.) each secured six draw controls apiece for Tufts.

Caroline Keating led the way for the Bobcats with a hat trick and a helper, good for four points on the night.

Sophie Powless (Fy.-Marcellus, N.Y.), with three saves in 45:00 of action, earned the goalkeeping win for the Jumbos. Avery Lehman gathered eight saves (38:01) in frame for the garnet and white.

Bates (5-7, 1-6 NESCAC) heads home to host No. 16 Amherst this Saturday at noon on Garcelon Field. The Bobcats will honor seniors Emma Austin, Madeleine Donovan, Sadie O'Neil, Maddy Roelofs, Hanna Matthews, and Isla Cotter prior to the opening draw with a special Senior Day ceremony.
