Women's lacrosse's offense explodes in 23-15 win at Plymouth State

PLYMOUTH, N.H. -- The Bates women's lacrosse team scored their most goals in one game since 2006 in a 23-15 win over Plymouth State on Wednesday.

Nine different Bobcats scored goals in the victory. Junior Caroline Taggart (Concord, Mass.) led the way with five goals and three assists. Senior captain Sadie O'Neil (Concord, Mass.) added four goals, four caused turnovers, and two draw controls. Sophomore Lauren Wong (Walpole, Mass.), first-year Laci Raveis (Fairfield, Conn.), and senior Hanna Matthews (Westwood, Mass.) all tallied hat tricks, with one assist apiece. Wong also recorded three ground balls.

The Bobcats (3-4) found themselves down 11-9 to the Panthers (3-3) with 9:03 left in the second quarter when Morgan Cunningham scored her second goal of the contest for the hosts.

But Wong had the answer, scoring an unassisted goal with 7:02 left and an unassisted player-up goal with 4:24 to go, knotting the score at 11 heading into halftime.

Tarryn O'Brien briefly gave the Panthers the lead again to start the third quarter before O'Neil tied the game at 12 with 13:37 left and Raveis gave Bates the lead for good just 30 seconds later. Raveis scored again with 7:52 left in the third to cap off a 5-0 run, giving Bates a 16-12 lead.

The Panthers hung around though and the Bobcats only had an 18-15 lead with 11:03 remaining in regulation. But the Bobcats finished the game on a 5-0 run to run away with the victory. Matthews played the role of closer, scoring three of the final five goals of the day for Bates.

The Bobcats are back in action Sunday when they host No. 8 nationally ranked Wesleyan on Garcelon Field at 11am.
