LEWISTON, Maine -- Middlebury College, the #1 team in the nation, scored early and often Saturday as the Panthers coasted to a 16-2 NESCAC victory on the road vs. Bates at Garcelon Field.
The road team accounted for the first 14 goals of the contest, a run that concluded with Kate Motley's second tally of the game at the 1:20 mark of the third quarter.
Emma Austin ended Middlebury's shutout bid at 13:48 of the fourth as the senior attack netted her fifth of the season (courtesy of a
Lauren Wong assist) for the Bobcats.
Austin's goal snapped a scoreless streak of 107:14 for the garnet and white, dating back to Bates' 20-8 victory at the University of New England, March 6.
Eight different Panthers contributed with goals in the Middlebury triumph. Susan Rowley set the pace with six points in the rout (five goals, assist). Motley would add one more score to finish with a hat trick. Hope Shue and Anna Spehr added two goals apiece.
The undefeated visitors (4-0, 3-0 NESCAC) dominated the shot column, 32-7 (23-6 on frame). Gina Driscoll (45:00) and Elizabeth Savage (15:00) each garnered a pair of saves in net for Middlebury with Driscoll being credited with the win.
Avery Lehman gathered seven saves in the complete-game effort (60:00) for Bates.
Bates (2-4, 0-3 NESCAC) will now pay a visit to Plymouth State University (N.H.) this Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. for a non-conference tilt.
