LEWISTON, Maine -- The Colby College Mules scored 20 points in the fourth quarter, rallying to defeat the No. 24 nationally ranked Bates women's basketball team by a final score of 63-61 Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium.
The Bobcats (19-3, 7-1 NESCAC) led by as many as nine points in the fourth quarter before the Mules (12-9, 4-4 NESCAC) made their move.
Bates first-year
Mya Hicks (Ann Arbor, Mich.) drilled a three from the corner with 7:59 left in regulation to give the Bobcats a 53-44 lead. Colby answered with a 10-0 run, capped off by an Ana Von Rumohr three-pointer with 4:38 to go, putting the visitors up 54-53. Sophomore
Elsa Daulerio (Harpswell, Maine) answered with a jumper, giving Bates the lead again with 4:08 left. But Von Rumohr sank one of two free throws on the other end, tying the game at 55. Then she drilled another three-pointer with 2:42 on the clock, putting Colby ahead for good.
Senior captain
Morgan Kennedy (Oklahoma City, Okla.) made things interesting late, sinking three free throws to trim the Colby lead to 59-58 with 31 seconds left. Colby's Chelsea Ibenegbu hit two free throws with 10 seconds left to put the Mules back up by three. And the Bobcats turned the ball over on their next possession, clinching the upset victory for the visitors.
The game featured eight ties and 11 lead changes. Kennedy led all scorers with 25 points on 9-20 shooting. Daulerio added 12 points and three blocked shots, but no one else on Bates scored more than five points in the contest.
Kate Olenik was one of four Mules in double figures, scoring a team-high 19 points on 7-16 shooting. Amelia Hanscom added 12 points on 6-8 shooting, nine rebounds, and three assists. Ibenegbu tallied 12 points and three steals. Meanwhile, Von Rumohr scored eight of her 10 points in the fourth quarter.
The Mules netted 14 points off 11 Bates turnovers.
Before the game, the Bobcats honored seniors
Morgan and
Alyson Kennedy (Oklahoma City, Okla.), and
Davina Kabantu (Portland, Maine), as part of Senior Day festivities at Alumni Gym. The Bobcats finish the regular season with a 10-1 record at home. Saturday's defeat snaps a 10-game winning streak for Bates. They are still in position to secure the top seed in the upcoming NESCAC tournament, but must beat Trinity this Friday in Hartford at 7pm to stay in first place in the conference.
