Men's Tennis Spring Slate Underway as Bobcats Open With Visit to DII Florida Southern

LAKELAND, Fla. -- Bates College's spring season is officially underway as men's tennis opened the championship portion of its campaign Thursday with a visit to Division II Florida Southern College.

The host-Mocs (2-2), playing their fourth dual match of the month, completed a clean sweep of the Bobcats, winning the match by a 7-0 score.

In doubles action, Florida Southern's Mario Garoz (So.-Toledo, Spain) and Ryan Rajakar (Jr.-Nokomis, Fla.) opened the day by defeating Bates' Matthew Danielson and Nicky Desai at No. 2 doubles, 6-1, while Inaki Braun Simo (Sr.-Zurich, Switzerland) and Matthew Hewitt (Fy.-Tampa, Fla.) edged Phillippe Kosyagin and Nico Ozer at No. 3, 7-6.

The Bobcats' No. 1 tandem of Alexander Gujarathi and Theo Sardain secured a win in their first outing of the year, topping Matteo Feggi (Sr.-Frankfurt, Germany) and Chris Fok Kow (Sr.-Balaclava, Mauritius)  by a score of 7-6.

With doubles counting for just one overall point, the Mocs' two wins earned the home team a 1-0 lead going into singles action. Florida Southern proceeded to take each of the six one-on-one contests to clinch the inter-division showdown.

Bates (0-1) will conclude its tour of the Sunshine State on Friday with a visit to Division II Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla. Start time is set for 3:00 p.m.
