LAKELAND, Fla. -- The newly-paired tandem of
Ally Friedman and
Iris Westmoreland appears to possess the mojo that Bates College women's tennis head coach
Paul Gastonguay '89 sensed during the preseason as the Bobcats' top doubles duo earned its second win to start the spring Thursday at Florida Southern College.
Taking on Beatriz Costa (Jr.-Lisbon, Portugal) and Laia Pasini (Sr.-Forster, Australia) from the host-Mocs, Friedman and Westmoreland doubled up the opposition, 6-3, to secure victories over an NCAA Division II foe on consecutive days.
Florida Southern (2-3) won the overall match, 7-0, as the Bobcats (0-2) wrap up play in the Sunshine State.
Vivien Charvatova (Jr.-Breclav, Czech Republic) and Kelly Klaren (Sr.-West Tisbury, Mass.) defeated Bates'
Julia Anderson and
Isabella Saul at No. 2 doubles, 6-2, while Kennedi Brown (So.-Mississauga, Ontario) and Jolie Miller (So.-Brooksville, Fla.) swept
Liv Gidlow and
Ava Steinberger at No. 3, 6-0.
With doubles counting for just one overall point, the Mocs' two wins earned the home team a 1-0 lead going into singles action. Florida Southern proceeded to take each of the six one-on-one contests to clinch the inter-division showdown.
