WATERVILLE, Maine -- Three second-half tallies, including a game-tying goal by
Henry Kuenstler with just 2:01 remaining, salvaged a season-ending stalemate for Bates College men's soccer as the Bobcats conclude the 2024 campaign with a 3-3 tie at Colby College.
The contest started with the host-Mules collecting two early goals in the first half as Mario Simoes (Belém, Brazil) and Oliver Daboo (So.Pittsburgh, Pa.) found the back of the net at 11:44 and 14:35, respectively. For Simoes, the senior secured his team-leading 10th of the year while Daboo booted in his first.
Trailing 2-0 at intermission,
Benny Bogyo (So.) one-timed a splendid cross from
Tomas Alberola (Jr.) to put the Bobcats on the board in the 53rd minute (52:10). Colby clipped Bates' momentum just 2:11 later as Simoes struck again at 54:21 (11th of season), courtesy of yet another Daboo helper, as the home team went back up by two scores (3-1).
The aforementioned Alberola inched the garnet and white a wee bit closer at 64:22 as the junior knocked home a feed from
Andrew Jean Baptiste, who had just intercepted a poorly-played Colby pass before setting the table for his teammate's first goal of the season.
With Colby now in possession of a 3-2 advantage, the stage was now set for Kuenstler's equalizer.
Ollie Schiff Stein fired off a corner kick that pinballed off multiple players before finding Kuenstler's left boot as the senior sizzled home a rocket of a shot from atop the Mules' penalty arc (2nd of season).
Despite playing from behind for most of the match, Bates sent off three times as many shots (21-7) as their host, which included 14 attempts in the second half alone. The Bobcats also owned a 6-4 surplus on frame.
George Nassar, closing out a stellar rookie season in net for Bates, recorded a lone save in 90:00 of work. Brendan McCarthy (Sr. Northborough, Mass.) collected three saves for Colby.
The Bobcats end the year with an overall mark of 6-7-2 (2-6-2 NESCAC). Colby finishes at 6-8-1 (1-8-1 NESCAC).
