LEWISTON, Maine -- It came a day later than planned, but Bates College men's soccer finally made its home debut Sunday as the Bobcats hosted 2022 national runner-up, Williams College, on historic Garcelon Field. The contest, originally scheduled for Saturday, was rescheduled due to residual high winds, courtesy of the aftereffects of Hurricane Lee.
The #4 Ephs, with a trio of tallies, shut out the host-Bobcats, 3-0, to remain undefeated (4-0, 2-0 NESCAC) on the young season. The garnet and white go to 1-3 (0-2 NESCAC) overall.
Dylan Kelemen (San Francisco, Calif.) accounted for the lone goal of the first half as the junior forward swiped the ball from a Bates defender, took two dribbles to his right, and deposited a blast into the net from about 30 yards out (12:40), putting Williams on the board.
The visitors struck again in the 59th minute (58:53) when Spencer Mix (Fy.-Canton, Conn.) headed home a pretty cross off the boot of Evan Vasquez (Ringoes. N.J.) for Williams' second score of the match.
The third-and-final goal came at 67:28 as Mohammed Keussom (So.-New York, N.Y.) came sliding across the middle of the Bates goalie box and sent in a Sam Gibson (So.-Chicago, Ill.) feed from the right side to make it 3-0 Ephs.
Williams owned a 17-14 advantage when it came to shots, included an 8-5 margin on frame. Ben Diffley (Sr.-Summerfield, S.C.) collected the win in net for the Ephs (five saves) while first-year netminder,
Trevor Hammond, also recorded five saves in a complete-game effort for Bates.
Bates returns to action Tuesday night with an 8:00 p.m. prime-time matchup vs. non-conference foe, Maine Maritime Academy, under the lights of Garcelon Field.
