LEWISTON, Maine -- Bates College Director of Athletics
Jason Fein announced Friday that
Shawn Warren has been named the school's new director of men's golf, effective August 14.
Warren, a PGA Class A professional, has participated in three PGA Championships (2018, 2020, 2022) and is a five-time New England PGA Player of the Year. He joins fellow PGA member, Abby Spector, on the Bates golf staff. Spector, who enters her third season as director of women's golf for the Bobcats, is a seven-time Maine Women's Amateur Golf champion and is a member of both the Maine Golf Hall of Fame and the Maine Sports Hall of Fame.
A Mainer and 2003 graduate of Windham High School, Warren was a two-time Maine Junior Amateur Champion (2000, 2001) and the Maine State High School Champion in 2002. He was unbeaten in match play (49-0-7) during his high school career.
"It is indeed a pleasure to officially welcome Shawn Warren as the director of men's golf here at Bates," Fein said. "Shawn brings with him a wealth of success in the sport of golf, and will provide an influential knowledge and passion to a team that has experienced a tremendous amount of positive momentum as of late. We look forward to the 2023-24 campaign as Shawn primes the Bobcats to compete at the highest level of athletics and academics."
Coach Warren played his collegiate golf at Marshall University in West Virginia and was a three-year captain for the Thundering Herd. He later became an assistant coach at his alma mater, and served as an assistant pro at such premier Maine golf courses as Dunegrass Country Club (Old Orchard Beach), Nonesuch Country Club (Scarborough), and Falmouth Country Club.
"I am beyond grateful to be joining the Bates family," Warren said. "The opportunity to lead a collegiate golf program is something for which I am incredibly thankful. A top priority of mine is to build a highly-engaged team that shares my commitment to blending the education and athletic opportunities that Bates College provides. Go Bobcats!"
Inheriting a roster that consists of 10 returners, the Bobcats look to build off a spring season that saw the garnet and white achieve their best-ever conference finish (T-4th) in the two-day NESCAC Championship, hosted by Bates at Martindale Country Club this past May.
Henry Ehrlich '26 and
Paul Detre '24 led the way for the Bobcats, both shooting six over par, good for a tie for ninth and just three strokes back of first place.
