AUBURN, Maine -- The Bates men's golf team achieved their best finish in the NESCAC ever as the Bobcats tied for fourth at the conference championship over the weekend in a two-day event hosted by Bates at Martindale Country Club.
After perfect weather on Saturday, the rain came on Sunday, forcing the 10 teams competing to only complete nine holes due to unplayable conditions. With 27 holes in the books overall, the Bobcats stood at 31 over par, good for a tie for fourth with Hamilton, Williams, and Trinity. All four teams tallied a score of 455.
In an extremely tight tournament, the Bobcats and company finished just one stroke back of a tie for second with Amherst and Tufts. Middlebury won the conference title with a two-day score of 439.
First-year
Henry Ehrlich (Portland, Ore.) and junior
Paul Detre (Morristown, N.J.) led the way for the Bobcats, both shooting six over par, good for a tie for ninth and just three strokes back of first place. Meanwhile, junior
John Kawakami (Northport, N.Y.) had the lowest score for the Bobcats on Sunday, with his nine-hole total of 37. Kawakami finished in a tie for 11th overall with his two-day score of 113, one stroke back of Ehlrich and Detre. Fellow junior
Evan Glicos (Windham, Maine) bounced back from a tough day on Saturday to shoot a 38 on Sunday, the second lowest score of the second round for Bates.
The NESCAC Championship concludes the spring season for Bates. The Bobcats do not lose any seniors from the five golfers who competed at NESCACs, so the fall season can't come soon enough for Director of Men's Golf
Brendon Croteau and his team.
