GREENE, Maine -- The Bates rowing team turned in a dominating performance and the Bobcats won their 10th consecutive President's Cup Regatta Saturday morning on the Androscoggin River.
The Bobcats won nine of the 10 races held on Saturday against rivals Colby and Bowdoin, with the University of Maine also competing in select events.
"We're very pleased with the entire program as they once again bring home the President's Cup," head coach
Peter Steenstra said. "The rowers did well to adapt quickly to unfamiliar lineups and the coxswains handled the strong cross wind with very few mistakes. This performance shows that, from top to bottom, we're ready for the championship season that begins with the New England Rowing Championship next weekend."
Action started at 9am and the men's novice four, led by first-year coxswain
Micah Shimizu (Batavia, Ill.) and first-year stroke
George Fauver (Bedford, N.Y.), won their race in 6:52.2, seven seconds faster than runner-up Bowdoin.
The men's varsity four race proved to be much closer, as Bowdoin, a club team, specializes in fours. But the Bobcats prevailed, with senior coxswain
Aidan Braithwaite (Milton, Mass.) and sophomore stroke
Sean Christiansen (Roxbury Conn.) leading the way. Bates crossed the finish line in 6:32.3, with the Polar Bears close behind at 6:33.0.
The women's novice four took to the water next, and led by first-year coxswain
Audrey Kamine (Rockville, Md.) and first-year stroke
Quinn Gleason (Wayland, Mass.), the Bobcats won a one-on-one race with the Polar Bears in 7:46.6. Bowdoin crossed the line in 7:53.3.
Senior coxswain
Hannah Braslau (Chelmsford, Mass.) and senior captain stroke
Casey Winter (Malvern, Pa.) had no problem leading the women's varsity four to victory next, out-racing runner-up Bowdoin 7:24.7 to 7:34.4. Colby and Maine finished a distant third and fourth respectively.
Led by senior coxswain
Isabella Sobolewski (Washington, D.C.) and junior stroke
Genesis Bussey (Bronx, N.Y.), a revamped women's second varsity eight rolled to a win over Bowdoin and Colby in 6:58.0. Then the men's second varsity continued their outstanding season with an open water win. Led by sophomore coxswain
Isabel Beck (Montclair, N.J.) and sophomore stroke
Ian Van Loo (Seattle, Wash.), the Bobcats raced to the finish in 6:06.3 compared to Bowdoin's 6:22.7.
The women's novice eight took second to Bowdoin in their race, but the men's novice eight cruised to the win over the Polar Bears. Led by first-year coxswain
Melinda Kostrinsky (New York City) and first-year stroke
Wiley Anderson (Ithaca, N.Y.), the Bobcats recorded a time of 6:38.4, more than half a minute ahead of Bowdoin (7:09.1).
The morning concluded with the men's and women's first varsity eight races. Led by Braithwaite and Fauver, the Bates men's 1V out-raced runner up Colby 6:02.5 to 6:12. Then junior coxswain
Lucy Del Col (Wellesley, Mass.) and Winter led the women's 1V down the 2K course in 6:57.2, out-racing runner-up Bowdoin (7:03.1) and Colby (7:23.0).
The Bobcats are back in action next Saturday at the New England Rowing Championship, hosted by WPI on Lake Quinsigamond.
