CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The Bates women's and men's rowing teams took on the Boston University and MIT lightweights respectively Sunday morning as part of the Charles River Racing Series.
"It was a rough day on the Basin today," head coach
Peter Steenstra said. "Cold temps with wind gusting up to 25mph but our coxswains did well aligning the crews on the start line and maintained their course throughout racing. Now that we were able to get the docks in last Friday on the Androscoggin River, we're looking forward to two straight weeks on the water at home before our next weekend of races on April 15/16."
The Bates men's third varsity eight got the day started at 8am on Sunday against the MIT 3V lightweights. The Bobcats raced to the finish in 7:29.7 while the Engineers crossed the finish line in 7:07.08. Then the Bates women's first varsity eight took to the course and finished the 2K race in 7:59.4. The BU lightweights won in 7:24.8.
At 8:30, the men's second varsity eight finished second to the MIT lightweights 2V with a time of 7:17.8. The Engineers raced to the finish in 7:03.7.
In the only non one-on-one race of the day, three Bates women's boats, the fourth varsity eight, the third varsity eight, and the second varsity eight, all raced together against the Boston University 2V lightweights. BU won the race in 7:55.5 but it was the closest contest of the day, with the Bates 2V finishing runner-up in 8:03.5.
The morning of racing concluded with the men's first varsity eight and the varsity four finishing second to their counterparts at MIT. The Engineers 1V lightweights raced to the finish in 6:26.6 and Bates crossed the line in 6:42.1 Meanwhile, the varsity four recorded a time of 9:25.8 to MIT's 8:54.2.
The Bobcats head to Malden, Mass. to race Tufts and Wesleyan, among others on Saturday, April 15.
