Softball Suffers Sweep at Amherst as Bobcats Go to Extra Frames for Second-Straight Day

AMHERST, Mass. -- Bates College softball, for the second-consecutive day, went to extra frames as the Bobcats and host-Amherst College wrapped up the first game of Sunday's NESCAC doubleheader in 10 innings. The Mammoths would outlast its guest to win the contest, 3-2, before taking the nightcap by a score of 3-1.

GAME ONE (Amherst 3, Bobcats 2) (10 inn.)

A Megan Taketa ground out to first base would be all that was needed to bring home the winning run in Sunday's 10-inning opener as the Mammoths secured the hard-fought conference win over the Bobcats. Taketa plated America Rangel, who started as the "ghost runner" at second base, before advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt by Abby Moravek to commence the frame.

Amherst, with single runs in the home half of the first and third innings, owned a 2-0 advantage when 1B Katherine Merisotis (Sr.-Coventry, Conn.) clubbed her first collegiate home run (a solo shot to right field) to put the Bobcats on the board in the top of the fifth.

A fielding blunder by the Mammoths in the sixth, which allowed RF Grace Householter (So.-Manhattan Beach, Calif.) to reach base, plated LF Sarah Cooke (So.-Wenham, Mass.) from second with the equalizer after the sophomore initially singled and advanced on a Amherst throw earlier in the stanza.

The aforementioned Moravek earned the win out of the Amherst bullpen as the first-year authored 1.2 innings of perfect relief for the victory. Dani Torres Werra went 8.1 innings, permitting two runs (1 ER) on eight hits and a pair of walks (6 K) before being lifted.

Madison Hollis (McMinnville, Tenn.), who went the distance in Saturday's 8-1, eight-inning road win at Hamilton, topped that output by hurling all 9.2 innings in this effort (8 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 3 K) as the first-year hurler compiled 17.2 innings pitched in 24 hours.

3B Kama Boswell (Sr.-Bellevue, Wash.) provided the lone multi-hit performance (2-for-3, BB) for the Bobcat lineup.

GAME TWO (Amherst 3, Bobcats 1)

Bates (11-11, 5-7 NESCAC) plated the nightcap's first run via an Amherst wild pitch in the top of the first, but that would be it the rest of the way for the Bobcats as a Sadie Pool two-run double in the third, followed by a Jess Butler solo homer in the fourth, sealed the Sunday sweep for the Mammoths (17-9).

Moravek, this time in a starting role, earned her second win of the afternoon (7.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 6 K) with the complete-game effort. Delaney Ranskin (Fy.-St. Johnsbury, Vt.), with a complete game of her own (6.0 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 1 K), was tagged with the defeat.

The garnet and white gets a much-needed repose as the Bobcats return to play next Sunday, April 23 for a non-conference home twin-bill vs. Keene State College. First pitch is slated for 12:00 p.m.
