WATERVILLE, Maine -- The Bates softball team scored just one run over the course of two games Wednesday, falling by scores of 7-0 and 2-1 to Colby in NESCAC action.
The Bobcats (10-8, 4-4 NESCAC) will look to bounce back this Saturday when they visit Hamilton for a doubleheader starting at 12pm.
Game One: Colby 7, Bates 0
Abby Orso tossed a complete game five-hitter and the Mules blanked the Bobcats 7-0 in game one of Wednesday's doubleheader.
Colby plated four runs in the first inning and never looked back, keyed by a Logan Luebbe two-run home run.
First-year
Madison Hollis (McMinnville, Tenn.) went 3-3 at the plate to lead the Bobcats. She was also the only Bates player to reach second base in the contest.
Chloe Wilcox had a big game for Colby, going 3-4 with a home run and two runs scored. Orso (5-4) also doubled and drove in two runs at the plate.
First-year
Delaney Rankin (St. Johnsbury, Vt.) tossed a complete game but took the loss in the circle for Bates.
Game Two: Colby 2, Bates 1
The Bobcats grabbed the early lead in game two of Wednesday's twin bill, but the Mules scored one in the second and one in the third to beat Bates 2-1.
With one out in the top of the first, sophomore
Sarah Cooke (Wenham, Mass.) got the offense going with a single. She stole second and scored on a double from first-year
Kennedy Jones (Ocean Springs, Miss.), putting Bates up 1-0.
Hollis (3-3) retired the side in order in the bottom of the first, but the Mules tied the game in the second on an Emma Burnham RBI single.
Colby took advantage of a Bates error in the third to score an unearned run off Hollis. A Luebbe RBI single put the Mules (14-8, 3-3 NESCAC) ahead for good.
The Bobcats threatened in the fifth when senior
Katherine Merisotis (Coventry, Conn.) ripped a two-out double. But she was left stranded and Colby starter Sam Ahlholm (5-2) did not allow another baserunner on her way to a complete game four-hitter.
Hollis pitched well for Bates, allowing just one earned run and striking out three while holding the Mules to six hits.
