COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Matching each other goal-for-goal over the initial three periods of action, Colorado College pulled away in the fourth frame, courtesy of a 5-1 surge, overcame visiting Bates College and defeated the Bobcats, 14-10, Thursday in NCAA Division III women's lacrosse competition.
Coming off Tuesday's 11-6 triumph over Division II Fort Lewis College, the garnet and white concludes its season-opening Rocky Mountain road trip at 1-1. The host-Tigers begin their campaign at 1-0 with the win.
With both squads netting a trio of tallies in each of the first three sessions, a 9-9 stalemate ensued heading in the final stanza. Colorado's Tobin Lonergan took matters into her own hands as the sophomore poured in three-straight goals to build a 12-9 cushion for the Tigers with 7:34 left in regulation.
Trish Balser (So.-Ponte Vedra, Fla.) countered by cutting the Bobcat deficit to 12-10 at the 6:24 mark, completing a hat trick on the day for the sophomore.
That would be as close as the Bobcats could claw as Colorado recorded a final pair of goals over the final minutes to seal the victory.
The Tigers edged Bates in the shot column, 28-24, while authoring a 23-18 advantage on frame.
Lonergan, thanks to her fourth quarter takeover, led all players with four goals and a pair of helpers in the Colorado College win.
Bates'
Maddy Roelofs (Jr.-Rye, N.H.) matched Balsar with a three-goal performance of her own.
Hanna Matthews (Jr.-Westwood, Mass.) netted a pair of goals for the Bobcats.
Despite the outcome,
Avery Lehman (Portsmouth, N.H.) still managed to secure a game-best nine saves in net (60:00) in the sophomore's first start of the year for Bates.
Sadie O'Neil (Jr.-Concord, Mass.) provided a goal while gathering a team-leading three caused turnovers and four draw controls.
The Bobcats now prepare to visit #11 Wesleyan University next Saturday (March 4) for the garnet and white's NESCAC opener. Start time is set for 12:00 p.m. in Middletown, Conn.
