WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- With the conference not completing its regular-season slate this fall, the NESCAC adjusted its championship tournament to an 11-team format. Benefiting from this restructuring was Bates College as the Bobcats, serving as the #11 seed, visited #6 Williams for Friday's First Round showdown.
It would be prove to be a brief appearance for the garnet and white as the host-Ephs eliminated the Bobcats, 3-0 (25-9, 25-11, 25-11). Williams (14-8) now moves on to Middlebury to take on the #3-seed Panthers Sunday at 3 p.m. in the NESCAC Quarterfinals.
Putting together a hefty hitting percentage of .444 as a team, Williams walloped 39 kills on 72 attempts (seven errors) in the three-set sweep. In contrast, Bates (7-15) could muster only 15 kills on 73 total attempts.
Senior captain, Marit Hoyem (Menlo Park, Calif.), topped all players with 10 kills on 12 attempts (two errors), resulting in a lofty hitting percentage of .667. Fellow captain, Lauren Kauppila (Sr.-New York, N.Y.), dished 18 assists in the win. Morgan Daetz (Fy.-Danville, Calif.) added 14 helpers of her own to go along with five service aces.
Ami Evans, Bates' team leader in kills this season, added five more to her total in the finale.
Chrissy Chu collected nine assists in the contest while
Ellie Asada recorded 11 digs for the 'Cats.
