LEWISTON, Maine (Russell Street Field) -- The Bates College men's soccer season came to a close Tuesday as visiting Colby College collected a pair of goals en route to the 2-0 NESCAC triumph over the in-state rival Bobcats.
Eduardo Casanova (Barcelona, Spain) netted what would be the game-winner in impressive fashion as the sophomore forward took advantage of a Bates infraction by bending in a direct kick just outside of the Bobcats' penalty box (19:21) for his fifth score of the year.
With Colby's 1-0 lead holding late into the second stanza,
Lane Fousheé seemingly headed home the equalizer at 80:49 off a set piece for Bates following a foul by the Mules. Unfortunately for the Bobcats, the sophomore was called offsides on the play, nullifying the scoring effort.
Lleyton Bristow (Minneapolis, Minn.) sealed the Colby victory (6-6-2, 2-6-2 NESCAC) in the 89th minute (88:43) as the first-year connected for the initial goal of his collegiate career. Teammate Nicholas Donnelly (Fy.-Manlius, N.Y.) gathered a deflection off a Bobcat throw-in attempt, and then found the boot of a sprinting Bristow who took off on the breakaway before depositing the clincher into the bottom left of the Bates frame.
The road team owned a slight edge in shot attempts, 11-9, while also owning a 6-4 margin on frame. Both squads attempted eight corner kicks apiece.
Brendan McCarthy (Jr.-Northborough, Mass.), with three saves over 90:00, collected the goalkeeping win for Colby.
Trevor Hammond was credited with four saves in a complete-game effort for the garnet and white.
Bates finishes the year with a mark of 3-11-1 (0-10-0 NESCAC).
