Agunloye Last-Second Goal Upends UMaine-Farmington, 2-1, in Men's Soccer Thriller

LEWISTON, Maine (Russell Street Track & Field) --  A Tife Agunloye goal with just two seconds remaining sent the Bobcat faithful into a frenzy Tuesday afternoon as Bates College stunned the University of Maine at Farmington, 2-1, in a non-conference tilt for the ages.

With the match locked in a 1-1 stalemate, Bates goalkeeper Trevor Hammond gloved a long UMaine-Farmington throw-in with 0:20 on the clock. Hammond proceeded to sling an outlet pass to Cesar Hoover, who then booted the ball to the opposing end of the pitch. The feed caught a sprinting Wilson Smith as the sophomore settled, then dished to a trailing Ollie Schiff Stein. The first-year provided a single touch before setting up Agunloye's left-footed, game-winning blast to the top of the UMaine-Farmington frame.

The thrilling victory snapped an agonizing seven-game winless streak for the Bobcats (3-9-1). The bewildered Beavers fall to 7-7-2 with the defeat.

UMaine-Farmington kick-started the afternoon's offense almost immediately when a Mohammed Adow (Fy-Auburn, Maine) pass pinballed off the Bobcat defense before finding the boot of Christian Beliveau (Sr.-Auburn, Maine), who proceeded to pour in the initial goal of the contest just 2:17 in.

Bates countered in unlikely fashion in the 17th minute (16:22) as a Beaver blunder turned itself into a dreaded "own-goal" for the visitors, knotting the score at 1-1. A Gerard Costa Farré corner kick was harmlessly sent (so it seemed) to UMaine-Farmington starting goalkeeper, Jack Wormald (Salisbury, N.H.). However, a Beaver defender inadvertently crashed into his net-minder, knocking the ball out of Wormald's mitts and into the goal for the equalizer.

Hammond, with four saves in the contest, collects the win. Jackson Leach (Fy.-Farmingdale, Maine), playing the entire second half in net for the Beavers, took the tough-luck loss.

The garnet and white returns to NESCAC play this Saturday with a 2:00 p.m. home game vs. #9 Connecticut College. The Bobcats will honor their senior class (Seba Niehenke, Harry Corman, Rawson Welch) prior to the match, which will be played on Garcelon Field.
