CASTINE, Maine -- A 12-3 run over the final 4:37 of regulation erased a five-point Bates College cushion as Maine Maritime Academy upended the visiting Bobcats, 70-63, Wednesday evening in non-conference women's basketball action.
After edging MMA by three (17-14) in the initial frame, the garnet and white scorched the Mariners with a 21-9 showing in the second quarter as the road team cruised into intermission with a seemingly-healthy 38-23 advantage.
An
Alexandra Long (So.-Newton, Pa.)Â three-pointer with 5:30 to go in the third made the score 48-34 Bobcats. The Mariners proceeded to reel in a mighty 14-0 spurt over the next 3:51, tying its guest at 48-all with 1:39 to go in the period.
Morgan Kennedy's (Jr.-Oklahoma City, Okla.) jumper at 1:13Â and a pair of successful free throws from
Meghan Graff (Sr.-South Portland, Maine)Â at 0:22 allowed the Bobcats to slip into the fourth with a slim 52-50 lead.
Bates looked to have righted the ship as it opened the final stanza with an 11-8 start, developing a 63-58 buffer with just over four-and-a-half minutes remaining in the contest. Incredibly, the Bobcats would not produce another point on the evening as the Mariners (5-5) proceeded to let loose on its miraculous march to victory.
The effort marks the Mariners'Â first-ever win vs. their in-state rival in four overall outings. Bates had won the previous three contests by an average margin of just over 28 points-per-game.
Maria Barela (So.-Albuquerque, N.M.) paced the victors with her team-best 21 points and four steals as four total Mariners eclipsed the double-digit mark in the scoring column.
The aforementioned Kennedy established a new personal season-high point total as the junior poured in 26 for the Bobcats, hitting 10-of-22 (four three-pointers) in 34 total minutes. Graff followed with 10 points of her own, while also snaring seven rebounds, over 31 minutes of play.
Elsa Daulerio (Fy.-Harpswell, Maine) topped all players with her 11 boards, five of which came on the offensive end of the floor.
Bates (6-5) now prepares to kick off NESCAC competition this Sunday afternoon as the Bobcats welcome Connecticut College to Alumni Gym (2:00 p.m.).
