Men's lacrosse hangs tough in 16-11 loss to undefeated No. 7 Bowdoin

LEWISTON, Maine -- The visiting No. 7 nationally ranked Bowdoin College Polar Bears held the Bates men's lacrosse team to three goals in the first half and defeated the Bobcats 16-11 Wednesday night at Garcelon Field.

Sophomore Jack Daoust (Westwood, Mass.) paced the Bobcats (0-9, 0-6 NESCAC) with three points, scoring two goals and dishing out an assist as well. He also recorded a ground ball and caused a turnover. Juniors Will Schinabeck (Shaker Heights, Ohio) and Malcolm Klingbeil (Powell, Ohio) added two goals apiece. Meanwhile, sophomore Wil Masterson (York, Maine) dished out a pair of assists. Junior Mick Burden (Kenilworth, Ill.) won 10 of 20 face-offs, tallied an assist, and recorded a team-high three ground balls. 

Patrick Fitzgerald and Will Byrne scored four goals and three goals respectively to pace the Polar Bears. Peter Kenerson added one goal and two assists. Ethan Barnard won 14 of 19 face-offs and recorded a game-high seven ground balls. 

Bowdoin (10-0, 6-0 NESCAC) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter before the Bobcats answered with goals from Sell and Klingbeil, cutting the deficit to 3-2 with 4:19 left in the first quarter. 

The Polar Bears went on a 6-0 run and held Bates to just one goal for the remainder of the half, taking a 10-3 lead over the Bobcats into halftime. 

Bates cut the deficit to six multiple times in the fourth quarter but couldn't get any closer until there wasn't enough time to pull off a comeback. The Bobcats out-scored Bowdoin 6-3 in the final 15 minutes of action.

Ground balls proved to be a big difference in the game, with Bowdoin recording 39 to 22 for Bates.

The Bobcats are back in action Saturday when they travel to Hamilton. The game gets underway at 1pm.
