Tufts sweeps softball in Senior Day doubleheader

LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates softball team celebrated Senior Day on Saturday, but ran into a buzzsaw in NESCAC East Champion Tufts University, falling to the Jumbos in a pair of games at Lafayette Street Field.

The Bobcats (8-16, 1-11 NESCAC) wrap up their season Monday at the University of Southern Maine with a doubleheader that gets underway at 3pm.

Game One: Tufts 12, Bates 2

The Bobcats hung with the Jumbos for four innings before Tufts pulled away late for a 12-2 win over Bates in game one of Saturday's doubleheader.

Michelle Adellman homered in the top of the first to put the Jumbos up 1-0. The Bobcats answered in the bottom the first, as senior Kennedy Ishii (Honolulu, Hawaii) doubled with one away. Junior Lindsey Kim (Palo Alto, Calif.) singled in Ishii, tying the game at one.

Down 2-1, Kim got the offense going again in the bottom of the fourth with a single through the left side. Sophomore Rachel Liazos (Westborough, Mass.) singled Kim to second and two outs later first-year Grace Householter (Manhattan Beach, Fla.) drew a walk, loading the bases. Then senior Aleah Pagan (Orinda, Calif.) delivered an RBI single, tying the game at two.

But a Bela Jimenez three-run home run in the fifth put Tufts ahead for good. The Jumbos added four in the sixth and three in the seventh to run away for the win.

Game Two: Tufts 8, Bates 0 (6 innings)

Tufts shut out the Bobcats in six innings in game two by a score of 8-0, with pitcher Sophia DiCocco tossing a complete game and allowing just five hits with two strikeouts.

Meggie Murphy started the game with a solo home run to make it 1-0, and they scored three runs combined in the third and fourth. Adelman scored in the third inning on a Bates error as Lexi Grein followed that up with an RBI single to center. Rachel Moore crossed the plate in the fourth inning for Tufts on a Josie Steinberg single.

The Jumbos scored four in the sixth inning as Jimenez added two more RBIs on a single to right center and Steinberg scored on a wild pitch in the next at-bat. Keriann Slayton ended the sixth with an RBI single to score Jimenez. DiCocco retired the Bates lineup in order in the sixth to clinch the 8-0 victory for Tufts and the series sweep.

Kim continued her hot hitting for the Bobcats, going 1-3 in game two and extending her hitting streak to 24 games, dating back to last season.
