BRUNSWICK, Maine -- The host Bowdoin College Polar Bears hit three home runs and powered their way to a 10-2 win in five innings over the Bates softball team Saturday morning in the rubber match of the three-game series between the NESCAC rivals.
The Bobcats (8-13, 1-8 NESCAC) took an early 1-0 lead in top of the first. With two away, senior captain
Janell Sato (Honolulu, Hawaii) singled up the middle. Junior
Lindsey Kim (Palo Alto, Calif.) kept her hitting streak going with a single of her own. Kim has hit safely in 21 straight games going back to last season. Sophomore
Rachel Liazos (Westborough, Mass.) singled as well, loading the bases with two away. First-year
Maggie Hillwig (Phoenix, Md.) reached on an error and the Bobcats scored the first run of the morning.
Bowdoin (12-13, 2-7 NESCAC) took the lead for good in the bottom of the first on a three-run home run from Lilly Armstrong. The Polar Bears scored four in the first and Bates got one back in the top of the second.
Senior captain
Emily Samar (New York City) singled to left field and advanced to second on an error to start the frame. With two outs, senior
Kennedy Ishii (Honolulu, Hawaii) doubled her home, cutting the deficit to 4-2.
An Angelina Mayers solo homer put Bowdoin up 5-2 through two innings. Then the Polar Bears struck for five runs on five hits in the third to go up 10-2. The Bobcats couldn't get any more runs on the board so the game ended after the top of the fifth due to the eight-run rule.
Liazos finished the game 2-2 at the plate. Ishii tallied the only extra base hit in the contest for the Bobcats. Bates is back in action on Wednesday, April 27 when the Bobcats visit the University of Southern Maine for a doubleheader that gets underway at 4pm.Â
