No. 8 Tufts too much for men's lacrosse

LEWISTON, Maine -- The visiting No. 8 nationally ranked Tufts University Jumbos scored 13 goals in the first quarter and never looked back, defeating the Bates men's lacrosse team 32-13 Wednesday night at Garcelon Field.

Tufts (9-2, 6-1 NESCAC) had 17 total goal-scorers and Max Ettinghausen led the way with five goals. Six other Jumbos had multi-goal games as Mac Bredahl and Jack Boyden both scored four, Camden Kelleher and Tommy Swank both scored three and Ethan Gatto netted two. Boyden also tallied six assists.

Bates junior Will Schinabeck (Shaker Heights, Ohio) led the Bobcats (0-11, 0-8 NESCAC) with three goals and first-year Bobby Conroy (Kirkwood, Mo.) and senior captain Jack Lousararian each finished with two.

The Jumbos scored the first three goals of the game with goals from Swank, Charlie Tagliaferri and Matthew Lane, but Bates halted the run with a goal from first-year Ben Miller (Scarsdale, N.Y.) on an assist from Schinabeck to make it 3-1.

Then Tufts kicked it into gear, scoring the next five goals. Bates retaliated with two of the game's next three goals, but the Jumbos outscored Bates 5-3 in the remainder of the first quarter to send it to the second with the score at 13-4.

After trading goals to start off the second, Tufts scored eight straight, with Ettinghausen scoring two of the eight goals. Bates followed that with three of their own consecutively before Bredahl ended the second quarter with a goal to make it 23-8 going into halftime.

The Jumbos stayed hot to start the second half, going on a five-goal run with goals by Duke Alf, Boyden, Callum Wood, Jered Kenny and Cole Salton.

Senior captain Jackson Sell (Mill Valley, Calif.) netted one for the Bobcats before Tufts went on another run of three goals to end the third quarter.

The Bobcats outscored Tufts in the fourth quarter 4-1 with goals from Lousararian, Schinabeck, Conroy and first-year Cooper Lance (San Diego, Calif.). Gatto scored the lone fourth-quarter goal for the Jumbos to give Tufts the 32-13 victory.

Four goalies were used in the game for the Jumbos, as Conner Garzone played the first half, making seven saves with a ground ball. Cody Wiebe played 15 minutes with three saves and Eugene Yoon made three saves as well with two ground balls in the fourth quarter. Shane Molloy also saw time in net for Tufts.

Bates goalies sophomore Spencer Wood (Los Altos Hills, Calif.and junior Garrett FitzSimons (Garden City, N.Y.) each had four saves while first-year Luke Heafey (San Francisco, Calif.) made six saves in the fourth quarter for the Bobcats. Tufts scooped up 45 ground balls compared to Bates' 31 and had the advantage in face-offs 26-22.

The Bobcats are back in action this Saturday at 1pm for Senior Day at Garcelon Field when they take on Connecticut College.
