Softball sweeps UMaine-Farmington in doubleheader

FARMINGTON, Maine -- The Bates softball team picked up a pair of wins on Tuesday, sweeping the University of Maine at Farmington in a doubleheader by scores of 5-3 and 13-6.

Bates (7-11) is back in action at Bowdoin this Friday at 4pm.

Game One: Bates 5, UMF 3

The Bobcats scored three runs in the top of the seventh to take the lead for good in a 5-3 win over the Beavers in game one of Tuesday's doubleheader.

With the score tied at two, senior Eliza McNulty (Cambridge, Mass.) reached on an infield single leading off the top of the seventh. Pinch hitter sophomore Cameron Jones-McNally (Marcellus, Mich.) followed with a single up the middle and first-year Grace Householter (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) delivered a pinch-hit single of her own, scoring McNulty and putting the Bobcats up 3-2.

With two on and two away, senior captain Janell Sato (Honolulu, Hawaii) delivered the big hit, a two-RBI double down the left field line, extending the Bates lead to 5-2.

The Beavers tried to rally in the bottom of the seventh. Katie Hammer led off with a double to left-center and Leah Stevens reached on an infield single. Stevens stole second and two outs later Christa Allen singled in Hammer, cutting the Bates lead to two.

But the Bobcats secured the victory when Makayla Wilson lined out to short for the final out of the game.

First-year pitcher Maggie Hillwig (Phoenix, Md.) tossed five innings, giving up two runs on two hits. She struck out three on the afternoon. Senior Danielle Polirer (Bellmore, N.Y.) earned the win out of the bullpen with two innings pitched.

Neither team scored until the Bobcats scored two in the top of the fifth. Junior Cassidy Musco (Walpole, Mass.) led off the inning with an infield single to third. She stole second and McNulty singled. Musco scored on the play thanks to a UMF error, putting Bates up 1-0. McNulty advanced all the way to third on the miscue, and scored when senior captain Emily Samar (New York City) delivered a sacrifice fly to right.

UMF got both runs back in the bottom of the fifth thanks to a pair of walks, a sacrifice bunt, and a two-RBI single from Olivia Paradis.

The Bobcats out-hit the Beavers by a count of 9-7 in game one and played error-free defense. Meanwhile UMF made three errors, allowing three unearned runs.

McNulty went 2-3 with two runs scored to pace the Bates offense.

Game Two: Bates 13, UMF 6

The Bobcats tallied a season-high 20 hits in a 13-6 win over the Beavers in game two of Tuesday's doubleheader.

A trio of Bobcats recorded three hits each. Senior Kennedy Ishii (Honolulu, Hawaii) went 3-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs in the contest. Junior Lindsey Kim (Palo Alto, Calif.) went 3-4, scoring two runs, driving in a run, and drawing a walk. Jones-McNally finished 3-4 at the plate as well with a double and an RBI.

Bates trailed 6-5 going to the top of the fifth. With one away in the inning, Householter singled to center. Jones-McNally bunted her to second and Samar tripled her home, tying the game at six. First-year Sarah Cooke (Wenham, Mass.) followed with a triple of her own and Bates led 7-6. Ishii singled home Cooke for the insurance tally.

Up 8-6, the Bobcats put the game out of reach with four runs in the sixth inning.

Bates loaded the bases with nobody out and Householter, Jones-McNally, and Samar delivered back-to-back-to-back RBI singles. Ishii singled home a run later in the inning, making the score 12-6.

The Bobcats added a run in the seventh when sophomore Rachel Liazos (Westborough, Mass.) doubled to lead off the inning and later scored on an error.

Polirer (5-3) tossed a complete game for the Bobcats, scattering nine hits and allowing just two earned runs. Polirer (5-3) struck out four batters along the way.

Bates grabbed a 4-0 lead in the top of the first. With one out, Ishii got hit by a pitch and Sato doubled her home. Kim drew a walk and the Bobcats pulled off a double steal before Liazos doubled both runners in to make the score 3-0. Householter delivered a sacrifice fly later in the frame for Bates.

UMF answered with three runs in the bottom of the first before Bates added a tally in the top of the second on a Kim RBI single. Kim is currently hitting .481 on the season, fifth in the NESCAC.

The Beavers grabbed the lead with three runs in the third but Polirer settled down after that, blanking UMF for the final four innings of the contest.
