WORCESTER, Mass. -- The Bates rowing teams competed for the second time in as many days on Sunday, with the men's team winning all four of their races and the women's team once again doing battle with top-ranked Wellesley.
"It was a tremendous day of racing by all the crews," head coach
Peter Steenstra said. "The men really had a great day on Sunday sweeping all four events and the women's team has set the stage for a very exciting spring at the top of D3 women's rowing."
The men's 1V provided the biggest highlight of the day, winning its race in 6:02.2. Led by senior coxswain
Evan Saltman (Newfields, N.H.) and senior stroke
Espen Wheeler (Paradis, Norway), the Bobcats defeated crews from Hamilton (6:04.35), WPI (6:04.19), Washington College (6:11.55) and RIT (6:19.5).Â
The men's 2V won its race with ease, with junior coxswain
Aidan Braithwaite (Milton, Mass.) and first-year stroke
Colton Sochia (Dallas, Texas) leading the Bobcats to an open-water win in 6:13.7 over WPI, Hamilton, and RIT.
Not to be outdone, the men's third varsity eight won its race by open water as well in 6:30 over WPI and Hamilton. Led by first-year coxswain
Rowan Cody (Madison, Wis.) and first-year stroke
Ian Van Loo (Houston, Texas), the Bobcats out-raced runner-up WPI by more than 13 seconds.
Two boats from WPI and a boat from Washington college were no match for the men's varsity four, which sophomore coxswain
Celia Tolan (New York City) led down the course in 7:26.9, completing the clean sweep for the men's team.
Sunday's races began with the women's second varsity eight winning its heat over WPI, Hamilton, and Pacific Lutheran. Led by junior coxswainÂ
Isabella Sobolewski (Washington, D.C.) and sophomore strokeÂ
Genesis Bussey (Bronx, N.Y.), the Bobcats raced to the finish in 7:07.1, 3.56 seconds ahead of runner-up WPI.
Perhaps the most exciting race of the day happened in the women's first varsity eight's heat. Led by sophomore coxswainÂ
Lucy Del Col (Wellesley, Mass.) and junior strokeÂ
Casey Winter (Malvern, Pa.), Bates (6:54.34) edged WPI (6:54.97) in a thriller.Â
Meanwhile the women's third varsity eight dominated its race, with sophomore coxswainÂ
Olivia Seline (Delaware, Ohio) and sophomore stroke
Emily Everett (Fair Haven, N.J.) leading the Bobcats to victory in 7:15.4 over Wellesley and Hamilton.
The Bobcats entered a pair of boats in the fourth varsity eight race, with the crews finishing in first and second respectively, ahead of WPI by open water. Led by first-year coxswain
Isabel Beck (Montclair, N.J.) and first-year stroke
Rylee Eaton (Little Deer Isle, Maine), the 4V won the race in 7:23.88.
After a break, the women's second and first varsity eights raced in their respective grand finals. At noon, the 2V took second out of five boats in 7:01.95, just being edged by the Blue of Wellesley (7:00.7) and well-ahead of third-place WPI (7:07).
Then the 1V wrapped up the day of racing with its grand final at 12:30. After out-racing Wellesley the day before, the Bobcats fell just short this time around, taking second in 6:46.5 while the Blue won the race in 6:43.87. WPI took third in 6:48.97, with Clark fourth and fellow NESCAC program Trinity in fifth.Â
The Bates rowing teams are back in action on Saturday, April 23 when the women take on the Radcliffe Lightweights and the men race MIT.
