LEWISTON, Maine -- The No. 15 nationally ranked Tufts University Jumbos scored 11 runs in the sixth inning of game one and seven runs in the third inning of game two to sweep the Bates baseball team in a doubleheader Sunday at Leahey Field.
The Jumbos (16-3, 4-1 NESCAC) defeated the Bobcats (5-16, 1-4 NESCAC) 16-5 in game one and 12-2 in game two.
Bates is back in action Wednesday when the Bobcats host Dean at 3:30pm.
Game One: Tufts 16, Bates 5
The Bobcats grabbed an early 5-1 lead but the Jumbos tied the game with four runs in the fifth and ran away with the 16-5 win over the Bobcats with 11 runs in the sixth inning in game one of Sunday's doubleheader.
Down 1-0, Bates took the lead in the bottom of the first against Tufts starter Cameron Mayer. Junior
Tyler Attal (Los Angeles) singled to start the frame and sophomore
Christopher Cimino (Scarborough, Maine) doubled over the head of the Tufts left fielder, advancing Attal to third. One out later, senior
Bryan Gotti (Westwood, Mass.) lined a single to left. The ball scooted under the left fielder's glove, allowing two runs to score as Gotti advanced to second. Then with two away, senior captain
Kevin Lucey (Topsfield, Mass.) singled down the left field line, scoring Gotti and putting Bates up 3-1.
The Bobcats added to their lead in the bottom of the second. With one out, junior
Drew Fallon (Mansfield, Mass.) doubled down the left field line. Attal singled him home and Cimino executed a perfect hit-and-run, hitting a single through the left side and moving Attal to third. Junior
Henry Jamieson (St. Simons Island, Ga.) followed with a sacrifice fly and Bates led 5-1.
Sophomore
Corbin McAlpine (Boxborough, Mass.) got the start for the Bobcats. He allowed a run in the first inning, but blanked the Jumbos for three straight innings after that.
But he ran into trouble in the top of the fifth. Miles Reid led off the inning with a double. Two outs later, Jackson Duffy singled him home. Ryan Noone followed with a single and Connor Bowman tied the game at five with a three-run home run to left.
McAlpine got the next batter to ground out but took a no-decision when the Jumbos got to the Bates bullpen for 11 runs on six hits in the sixth inning. The inning featured four walks and a hit-by-pitch. A pair of three-run home runs sparked the Tufts offense, with Noone and pinch hitter Connor Flavin going deep.
Reliever Connor Podeszwa (4-0) got the win in game one for Tufts with five innings of shutout ball. He struck out six and allowed only three hits.
Cimino went 4-4 in game one for the Bobcats and Attal went 2-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Game Two: Tufts 12, Bates 2
The Jumbos scored four runs in the first and seven in the third to take command of game two of Sunday's twin bill, defeating the Bobcats 12-2.
Tufts loaded the bases with nobody out and a double play scored the first run of the game. Kyle Cortese tripled in a run and scored on a passed ball. A hit by a pitch and an RBI double off the bat of Duffy made the score 4-0.
In the third inning, the Jumbos took advantage of three walks and three hit by pitches to score seven runs on three hits. Jimmy Evans delivered the big blow, a three-run home run to dead center.
Down 11-0, the Bobcats got on the board in the fifth when Lucey led off the inning with a home run. First-year
Ben Gesmondi (Portsmouth, R.I.) followed with a single to center and sophomore
Noah Jankowski (Methuen, Mass.) delivered a pinch-hit single to left.
Fallon drew a walk and Attal singled home Gesmondi for the second run of the inning.
Attal's hit chased Tufts starter Michael Volgende from the game. Reliever Jack Schwartz (2-0) entered the game and tossed three shutout innings, preventing Bates from rallying.
Jankowski paced the Bobcats in game two at the plate, going 2-3 with a double. Tufts out-hit Bates 14-6 in the contest.
