BANGOR, Maine -- The Bates baseball team tallied 10 hits but left 10 on base in an 8-2 loss at Husson Wednesday afternoon.
The Eagles (5-10) scored three runs in the fifth inning to take the lead for good. They added two in the sixth and one in the eighth. The Bobcats (2-12) used eight different pitchers in the contest.
Sophomore
Corbin McAlpine (Boxborough, Mass.) got the start for the Bobcats and tossed a scoreless inning, striking out one. Senior
Jared Pantalony (Brooklyn, N.Y.) also tossed a scoreless inning, striking out one.
Bates got on the board first in the top of the second when first-year
Ben Gesmondi (Portsmouth, R.I.) connected for the first home run of his collegiate career.
The Bobcats had a golden opportunity to add to the lead in the top of the third, loading the bases with nobody out. Junior
Drew Fallon (Mansfield, Mass.) singled to start the frame. First-year
Joe Bianchi (Scituate, Mass.) drew a walk and senior captain
Kevin Lucey (Topsfield, Mass.) reached on an infield single.
But Husson starter Chris Naylor got two strikeouts and a ground out to get out of the jam unscathed.
The Eagles grabbed a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third, thanks to three straight walks to start the frame. Jackson Curtis delivered a sacrifice fly, as did Ethan Stoddard.
Bates rallied to tie game in the top of the fourth. Senior
Bryan Gotti (Westwood, Mass.) got things started with a double to right. Gesmondi singled him to third and junior
John Nowak (Pelham, N.Y.) singled Gotti home, making the score 2-2.
First-year
Ian McAslan (Baltimore, Md.) tossed a scoreless bottom of the fourth but the Eagles got to him in the fifth. Kobe Rogerson singled to start the frame and McAslan (0-2) hit the next batter with a pitch. Joshua Scott tripled to center field to score both runners ,then scored on a RBI groundout by Stoddard.
That's all Husson relievers Jake Gregoire (1-1), Harrison Lendrum, and Ryan Robb needed, as they combined to throw six shutout innings down the stretch.
Gesmondi, Fallon, and Lucey paced the Bates offense with two hits each. Rogerson tallied three hits for the Eagles. Husson only tallied eight hits in the game but also drew four walks.
The Bobcats open NESCAC play Friday at Trinity. First pitch is set for 3pm.
