HARTFORD, Conn. -- The Bates baseball team opened NESCAC play with a pair of close losses Saturday at Trinity, falling 6-5 in extra innings in game one and 4-1 in game two.
The Bobcats (2-14, 0-2 NESCAC) take on the Bantams (8-5, 2-0 NESCAC) in a single game Sunday at 10am.
Game One: Trinity 6, Bates 5 (8 innings)
In game one, Bates took an early four-run lead in the top of the first, with junior
Bryan Gotti (Westwood, Mass.) sending a three-run homer over the right field fence. Trinity responded by scoring a run in the bottom of the first and second while adding three in the third as James Stefanowicz ripped a two-RBI triple into the right center gap, scoring Colin Mann and Sean Meth.
Down by one, the Bobcats tied the game in the top of the sixth. Sophomore
Jack Brennan (West Hartford, Conn.) singled to lead off the frame. He stole second, advanced to third on a ground out, and scored on a passed ball.
In the bottom of the eighth with the score tied at five runs apiece in what was a scheduled seven inning game, back-to-back walks put runners on first and second. Trinity's Brandon Chow reached on a fielder's choice which pushed pinch runner Yoshi Omi-Jarrett to third. Jack Mathews then recorded a sacrifice fly to center with Omi-Jarrett scoring the game-winning run.
James Fahey pitched five innings and recorded six strikeouts for the Bantams while Cooper McGrath pitched the game's final three innings to earn the win.
First-year
Ian McAslan (Baltimore, Md.) impressed out the bullpen for Bates in a no-decision, tossing four shutout innings while allowing only one hit.
Game Two: Trinity 4, Bates 1
Game two saw the Bobcats scoring the first run of the game in the top of the first but Trinity would not surrender another run for the remainder as Bates fell 4-1.
Trinity's Mike Guanci was hit by a pitch to walk in Patrick Dillon Dillon for the lead in the third while Bennett Teceno and Jake Miller each singled in the fifth to drive runs in. Michael Aceto pitched 4.2 innings with a pair of strikeouts to earn the win while William Simeone struck out the side in the top of the seventh to close out the game for the Bantams.
Junior
Henry Jamieson (St. Simons Island, Ga.) doubled in classmate
Tyler Attal (Los Angeles) for the lone run of the game for the Bobcats.
