Baseball drops a pair of games at Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- The Bates baseball team dropped a pair of games to Springfield on the road Saturday afternoon, falling 10-0 in game one and suffering another one-run defeat with a 6-5 loss in game two.

The Bobcats (2-11) have gone 0-4 in one-run games so far this season. They look to get back on the winning track at Husson this Wednesday at 4pm.

Game One: Springfield 10, Bates 0 (7 innings)

Brenden Kirck and Matthew Robinson combined to no-hit the Bobcats 10-0 in game one of Saturday's doubleheader.

Kirck (2-0) threw five perfect innings, striking out six batters. Robinson pitched a perfect sixth before first-year Brennan Kelley (Huntersville, N.C.) drew a one-out walk in the seventh. With two down, junior Henry Jamieson (St. Simons Island, Ga.) drew a walk of his own but both runners got left stranded.

The Pride tallied 10 runs on nine hits in the contest. Junior Teddie Nelson (Marshfield, Mass.) started for the Bobcats and threw four innings, giving up five runs (three earned) on four hits.

Springfield struck for the game's first run in the bottom of the first as Andrew McCarty singled and advanced to second on an error before Noah Bleakley singled to right field to get the scoring underway.

With one out in the bottom of the fifth, Cadin Maynard was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a wild pitch to give the Pride two base runners in scoring position. Noah Diamond then hit a double down the left field line to bring Maynard and Ryan Sorgi across the plate. Luke DiMauro then singled to score Diamond as Springfield closed out the inning with a 8-0 lead.

Springfield's Jack Simonetty hit a two-run home run to push the lead to 10-0 in the sixth.

With two runs in and two on with nobody out in the sixth, the Bobcats brought in first-year Matthew Shrake (Chicago), who got a fly out, a foul out and a strikeout to end the inning.

Game one of Saturday's doubleheader was the first time Bates baseball has been no-hit since 2003.

Game Two: Springfield 6, Bates 5 (7 innings)

The Bates baseball team's woke up a bit in game two of Saturday's doubleheader, but Springfield pushed across a run in the bottom of the fifth to edge the Bobcats by a score of 6-5.

Down 3-0 in the top of the second, the Bobcats got a two-out double from senior Bryan Gotti (Westwood, Mass.) to get the offense going. First-year Ben Gesmondi (Portsmouth, R.I.) singled Gotti home but got thrown out trying to take second base.

The Pride led 4-1 through two innings but Bates got two back in the top of the third. Sophomore Christopher Cimino (Scarborough, Maine) led off with a single and junior Drew Fallon (Mansfield, Mass.) tripled him home. Senior captain Kevin Lucey (Topsfield, Mass.) drove in Fallon with a sacrifice fly and the Bobcats trailed 4-3.

Bates tied the game in the top of the fourth. With one away, sophomore Noah Jankowski (Methuen, Mass.) tripled to right center. Gotti drew a walk and Gesmondi drove in Jankowski with a sacrifice fly. Cimino singled but he and Gotti got left stranded.

The Pride grabbed a 5-4 edge in the bottom of the fourth before the Bobcats rallied again in the top of the fifth. With one out, sophomore Jack Brennan (West Hartford, Conn.) drew a walk. Junior Tyler Attal (Los Angeles) doubled in Brennan and the game was tied at five. Bates loaded the bases in the frame but did not score any more runs.

Springfield was able to retake the lead in the bottom of the fifth, as Simonetty ripped a two-out single to complete the scoring in the 6-5 win for the home team. The Bobcats did not threaten the rest of the way.

Cimino led the way in game two for the Bates offense, going 2-3 with a run score. Bates tallied eight hits in the game while Springfield tallied nine.
