Three Bobcats record hat tricks in women's lacrosse's 18-1 win over Southern Maine

LEWISTON, Maine -- Three Bates women's lacrosse players recorded hat tricks and the Bobcats earned Renee Olsen her first career win as a head coach with an 18-1 victory over the University of Southern Maine Wednesday night.

First-year Trish Balser (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) paced the Bobcats with three goals and one assist. Senior captain Dana Swartz (North Andover, Mass.) tallied three goals and a pair of ground balls. Senior Kate Loughlin (York, Maine) scored three goals as well on the evening.

Bates (1-1) got a pair of goals from sophomore Emma Austin (Norwich, Vt.) and first-year Annie Lowenstein (Yarmouth, Maine) in the win, with both players scoring the first two goals of their collegiate careers. Austin also caused a pair of turnovers. Ten different Bobcats found the back of the net on Wednesday. Sophomore Maddy Roelofs (Rye, N.H.) turned in a well-balanced performance, scoring a goal, dishing out a game-high two assists, recording three ground balls and causing a turnover.

Senior captain Anna Reaman (Hingham, Mass.) was a standout on defense, recording three ground balls and causing a game-high three turnovers.

Swartz scored the first goal of the game on an assist from junior Annie Conway (South Salem, N.Y.) less than a minute in and the Bobcats never looked back.

Bates tallied five goals in the first quarter and exploded for seven goals in the second quarter to go up 12-0 at halftime.

Rachel Shanks helped the Huskies (1-1) avoid being shutout with a goal in the fourth quarter on an assist from Zowie Cheetham-Wilmot.

The Bobcats tallied 39 shots on the evening to USM's three. They also controlled the ground ball battle, winning 31-7.

Bates is back in action this Saturday when the Bobcats welcome Wesleyan to Garcelon Field for a 12pm tilt in the NESCAC opener for both teams.
