Baseball's offense struggles in 6-1 loss at MIT

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- MIT held the Bates baseball team to just four hits as the Bobcats fell 6-1 to the Engineers on the road Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action.

The Bobcats (2-6) did draw eight walks in the contest but left 12 runners on base. Nick Aiello smacked a two-out, two-run inside the park home run in the bottom of the first to give the Engineers (2-4-1) the lead for good.

Bates recorded a pair of hits in the second inning on singles from junior Henry Jamieson (St. Simons Island, Ga.) and senior captain Kevin Lucey (Topsfield, Mass.), but both runners were left stranded.

MIT added to the lead in the bottom half of the frame on a Cory O'Shea RBI double. The Bobcats loaded the bases via walks in the fourth inning but failed to score.

Junior Teddie Nelson (Marshfield, Mass.) got the start for the Bobcats and went four innings, giving up four runs on six hits while striking out three. Casey Bussone tossed four shutout innings for the Engineers and Saketh Gabbita (1-0) earned the win with two scoreless innings out of the bullpen. First-year Matthew Shrake (Chicago, Ill.) threw two innings out of the bullpen, allowing just an unearned run on the afternoon. Sophomore Corbin McAlpine (Boxborough, Mass.) tossed an inning and allowed one run while striking out one. Senior Ian Tolis (Madison, Conn.) worked a shutout frame, striking out a pair.

Down 6-0, Bates got on the board in the top of the eighth. Lucey got hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a ground out. First-year Ben Gesmondi (Portsmouth, R.I.) reached on an infield single, moving Lucey to third. Then Lucey scored on a wild pitch. With two away, first-year Brennan Kelley (Huntersville, N.C) got hit by a pitch but Bates left both runners stranded, leaving the score at 6-1.

The Engineers tallied 10 hits and left 13 runners stranded. MIT tallied five extra base hits while Bates recorded all singles.

The Bobcats are back in action Sunday when they visit Brandeis for a doubleheader that gets underway at 1pm.
