Brandeis out-slugs Bates baseball in Sunday doubleheader

WALTHAM, Mass. -- The Bates baseball team hit the ball well, but host Brandeis swept a doubleheader from the Bobcats Sunday afternoon in non-conference action.

The Judges (5-2) took game one 7-6 and exploded for a 21-9 win over Bates (2-8) in game two.

Bates and Brandeis square off again in a single game this Thursday at 4pm, another road contest for the Bobcats.

Game One: Brandeis 7, Bates 6 (7 innings)

Mike Khoury's RBI single in the bottom of the seventh gave the Judges a 7-6 walk-off win over the Bobcats in game one of Sunday's doubleheader.

Bates stormed back from an early 6-0 deficit to tie the game at six in the sixth inning.

Junior Drew Fallon (Mansfield, Mass.) got the offense going in the fifth with a double to center. First-year Brennan Kelley (Huntersville, N.C.) reached on an infield single and Fallon advanced to third on the play. One out later, junior Henry Jamieson (St. Simons Island, Ga.) drove in Fallon with a sacrifice fly to right.

Now down 6-1, the Bobcats scored five runs in the sixth and tied the game.

Senior captain Kevin Lucey (Topsfield, Mass.) started the rally with a double to left. Sophomore Noah Jankowski (Methuen, Mass.) followed with an infield single and a wild pitch moved both runners up 90 feet. One out later, first-year Brandon Biggane (Rensselaer, N.Y.) got hit by a pitch to load the bases. Fallon drove in Lucey for the first run of the inning with a ground out to short. Then Kelley drew a walk to load the bases again.

Sophomore Jack Brennan (West Hartford, Conn.) stepped to the plate and delivered a two-RBI double down the left field line, cutting the Brandeis lead to 6-4. Then Jamieson followed with a two-RBI double of his own and the game was tied at six.

But the Judges loaded the bases thanks to two walks and a hit by pitch with one out in the bottom of the seventh and Khoury delivered the game-winning single.

First-year Micah Sheats (Niwot, Colo.) pitched well out of the bullpen for the Bobcats, tossing four innings and allowing only two runs after a tough start for senior Grant Iuliano (Waltham, Mass.), who pitched two and a third innings, giving up five runs in two and a third innings. Sheats (0-2) took the loss though when the Judges pushed across the winning run in the seventh.

The Bobcats tallied 10 hits in the loss, with Kelley going 3-3 with a run scored, a double, and a walk. Lucey went 2-4 with a run scored and a double.

Khoury had a big game for the Judges, going 3-5 with a home run, a double, and the game-winning hit.

Game Two: Brandeis 21, Bates 9

The Bobcats took an early 4-0 lead in game two of Sunday's doubleheader but the Judges recorded a pair of six-run innings to run away with a 21-9 victory over Bates.

Kelley and Jamieson drew walks and Lucey got hit by a pitch to load the bases for Bates with two outs in the top of the first. Jankowski drew a walk as well and the Bobcats lead 1-0.

In the second inning, first-year Ben Gesmondi (Portsmouth, R.I.) singled to right center and Fallon followed with a two-run home run, the first long ball of his collegiate career.

Up 3-0, the bobcats added another run in the top of the third. Jankowski singled down the left field line to start the frame and advanced to second on a Brandeis error.

A ground out moved Jankowski to third and he scored on a Gesmondi sacrifice fly.

Brandeis answered with six runs in the bottom of the third, all coming with two outs. Drew Michaud's grand slam was the big blow in the inning and the Bobcats found themselves down 6-4 through three innings.

Bates took the lead back in the top of the fourth. Kelley singled to start the frame and two outs later senior Bryan Gotti (Westwood, Mass.) got hit by a pitch. Lucey singled Kelley home and Jankowski doubled in Gotti and Lucey to put Bates up 7-6.

Remarkably, the Judges hit their second grand slam in as many innings in the bottom of the fourth. This time Dan Frey burned the Bobcats with his blast, making the score 10-7 in favor of Brandeis.

The Judges continued to flex their muscles with a Khoury two-run homer in the fifth.

Down 12-7, Bates pulled to within four in the top of the seventh. Jankowski led off the inning with a double and first-year Ben Genser (Newton, Mass.) reached on an infield single. Both runners advanced on a fly out and Fallow drove in Jankowski with a sacrifice fly.

The Judges hit their fourth homer of the game, this one a two-run shot, to highlight a six-run bottom of the seventh, pulling away from Bates in the process.

Genser smacked a home run of his own for Bates in the ninth, but it was too little too late as the Judges swept the doubleheader.

Bates finished with nine runs on 13 hits while Brandeis had 21 runs on 18 hits.
