BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Bates men's hoops put its three-game losing streak in the rearview mirror Friday night as the Bobcats, behind a season-high 21 points from
Jahmir Primer, put away Bowdoin College, 70-60, in the non-conference portion of the 2022-23 two-game set between the rivals.
The garnet-and-white opened the night feeling right as the Bobcats concocted a 9-0 lead to start the contest. A
Brady Coyne (Fy.-Falmouth, Maine) three-pointer at the 9:38 mark of the first half put the visitors up, 22-11, before the Polar Bears posted a 12-3 push to end the stanza down by just a bucket at 25-23.
Bowdoin (4-6) carried its momentum into the second frame, outscoring the Bobcats 16-10 over the first 7:31 of the half to maintain a four-point lead (39-35) with 12:21 remaining in regulation.
Three subsequent lead changes and a trio of stalemates would follow over the next 4:24. With Bowdoin owning a slim 47-46 advantage, the aforementioned Primer put his squad ahead for good with 7:57 left as the sophomore sank a pair of free throws to put Bates up by one.
The Hempstead, N.Y. native's three-pointer with 2:31 to go capped a Bobcat surge of 15-2 to provide the road team a game-high, 12-point lead of 61-49. The Polar Bears did all they could to chip away at its deficit over the final 150 seconds, outscoring its guest by two (11-9) in that time, but ultimately could not avoid a third-straight setback to their NESCAC foe.
Primer, in 34 total minutes, connected on three three-pointers, while nailing nine-of-nine free throw attempts, in the victory. He also grabbed seven rebounds and snagged a team-best four steals.Â
Simon McCormick (Whitefield, Maine) also hit for three three-pointers of his own as the junior accounted for 17 total points in his 37 minutes for the Bobcats. Senior
Steph Baxter (Worcester, Mass.) topped the squad with nine rebounds, complemented by his 11 points, over 25 minutes.
Bates (5-7) now looks to Saturday as the Bobcats prepare to visit Colby College for a 5:00 p.m. non-conference rivalry game.
