Lewiston, Maine (Wallach Tennis Center) - Bates College opened day one of the annual Wallach Invitational in style as both
Cameron Kania (Middlefield, Conn.) and
Matthew Danielson (Jr.- St. Petersburg, Fla.) advanced to Sunday's semifinal round with singles victories for the Bobcats' men's tennis squad.
Kania opened "A" singles action with a first round defeat of Trinty College's Enrico Buoro (7-5, 6-4) before dismissing Joey Barrett of Colby College (7-6, 3-6, (10-8)) to earn the semifinal berth. The senior will take on another Trinity opponent Sunday morning as the Bantams' Henry Bilicic advanced with wins over Kania's teammate,
Nick Forester (Sr.-Falmouth, Maine), and Sergiu Celebidachi of Skidmore College.
In "B" singles play, Danielson sent off Trinity's Kartik Erodula in straight sets (6-0, 6-3) before defeating fellow Bobcat,
Nikesh Desai (Jr.-Hopkinton, Mass.), in the subsequent stanza (6-1, 6-1). Desai advanced with an opening round win over Colby's Josh Fleishman by scores of 7-5, 5-7, (11-9).
As for "A" doubles competition, the tandem of Kania and
Alexander Gujarathi (Jr.-Plymouth, Mass.) advance to Sunday action with a victory over teammates Danielson and
Leo Kupferman (Sr.-Montclair, N.J.), 8-6, after receiving a first-round bye. Danielson and Kupferman pushed past Trinity's Bilicic and Jack Ginter, 8-4, to move on to round two.
Ben Adey (So.-Falmouth, Maine) and
Evangelo Kapothanasis (So.-Westbrook, Maine) highlighted "B" doubles with an 8-4 victory over Buoro and Brandon Felcher of Trinity to earn the semifinals bid.
The Wallach concludes Sunday morning at 9:00 a.m.
