Lewiston, Maine (Russell Street Track & Field) - An
Alec Szwarcewicz (Newton, Mass.) laser beam in the 85th-minute snapped a 1-1 tie and secured the first NESCAC victory of the year for Bates College as the Bobcats finished off visiting Trinity College, 2-1, Saturday in men's soccer action.
A Trinity infraction at 84:46 set up the winning tally as Szwarcewicz scorched a bending direct kick from the top of the box into the upper right, resulting in the senior's team-leading fourth goal of the year. The victory evens Bates' overall record at 4-4 (1-4 NESCAC). The Bantams drop to 0-4-3 (0-4-1).
After a scoreless first half,
Tife Agunloye (Monroe, Conn.) opened the scoring for the Bobcats just 3:50 into the second stanza (48:50). The sophomore gathered a
Sebastian Iacovitti (Fy.-Florence, Italy) feed at midfield and dashed the rest of the way, slipping in his second of the year.
Trinity countered at 75:37 with the equalizer when Rasheed Sarieh (So.-Nashville, Tenn.) one-timed a James Donaldson (Jr.-Kirkland, Quebec) cross, tying the score at 1-1.
The Bobcats finished with a 13-10 shot advantage over the Bantams (8-5 on frame).
Nico Hessel (Fy.-Brattleboro, Vt.) collects his first-career NESCAC win, gathering four saves in the complete-game performance for Bates. Bernardo Simoes (Jr.-Lisbon, Portugal) collected six saves for Trinity.
The garnet and white returns to the pitch this Tuesday with a non-conference date with University of Maine-Farmington. Start time is set for 3:30 p.m.
