Men's soccer blanks Eastern Nazarene, 2-0

LEWISTON, Maine -- Junior Max Elsasser scored his first collegiate goal and Bobcat captain Alec Szwarcewicz added a goal of his own, leading the Bates men's soccer team to a 2-0 win over Eastern Nazarene College Tuesday night at Garcelon Field.

In the 29th minute, junior Bobby Dall (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) played a little give-and-go along the near sideline with Szwarcewicz. Dall beat his defender and ripped a cross to Elsasser (Bow, N.H.), who one-timed it home from the doorstep for the eventual game-winner.

It wasn't easy for the Bobcats (4-1), as the Lions (3-4) kept the pressure on the Bates defense throughout the night. Junior Ryan Manning (Belchertown, Mass.) matched his career-high with five saves during his 75:47 minutes in goal. Manning got shaken up late in the match and was replaced by sophomore Luca Antolini (Yarmouth, Maine), who made a nice save of his own just moments after entering the match on a shot from Eastern Nazarene's Jaime Romero.

Romero finished with four shots, two on goal. The Lions totaled 16 shots (six on goal) while Bates recorded 11 shots, with just two on goal. But the Bobcats made both of their shots on goal count, with Szwarcewicz scoring his third of the season in the 72nd minute.

Senior Freddy Hohmann (Bonn, Germany) delivered a set piece into the box that an Eastern Nazarene defender headed backwards, right onto the foot of Szwarcewicz, who poked it past the keeper with his right leg to make the score 2-0 in favor of Bates.

Bates has another non-conference match this Saturday when the Bobcats visit Brandeis. The action gets underway at 2pm.
