LEWISTON, Maine -- Mya Johnson scored in the fifth minute and the goal held up as the game-winner, as Connecticut College prevailed 1-0 over the Bates women's soccer team Saturday at Russell Street Field.
The Camels (1-1, 1-0 NESCAC) mostly controlled play in the game and outshot the Bobcats (1-2-1, 0-2-0 NESCAC) by a 23-10 margin, but only a 7-5 difference in shots on goal. Connecticut College also took six corner kicks to none for Bates.
The game's only goal occurred on an unusual play, less than five minutes into the game. A long lead ball played by Connecticut College's Kat Norton sent Bates senior defender
Lauren Berube (Auburn, Maine) and senior goalkeeper
Kat Nuckols (Los Angeles, Calif.) converging on the ball near the left corner of the Bates penalty area, with the Camels' Johnson in hot pursuit behind Berube. Berube attempted to shield Johnson from reaching the ball while Nuckols reached it first and attempted to clear it. But Nuckols' kick struck Berube, who fell to the ground, and Johnson's momentum led her to collect the rebound. Nuckols and a second Bates defender then were forced to chase after Johnson, but the Camel forward slid the ball under the Bates back's foot, and it dribbled slowly over the line and into the goal for a 1-0 Camel lead.
Johnson attempted seven shots in the game, three of them on goal.
Bates continued to play aggressively in the second half, forcing Camels goalie Sarah Hall to make saves on shots by junior
Elizabeth Patrick (Ipswich, Mass.), first-year
Charlotte Jones (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) and
Cece Pilgrim (North Kingstown, R.I.). Then a foul in the Conn penalty area resulted in a penalty shot for Bates sophomore
Rachael Mello (Douglas, Mass.), but Mello's bid to tie the game up with 16:31 left sailed over the crossbar. Hall saved a final shot on goal by Jones with 9:35 remaining to preserve the victory.
Nuckols made six saves in the game, while Hall made five.
Bates will next play a non-conference game at the University of New England on Wednesday at 7pm.
