LEWISTON, Maine -- Connecticut College broke a scoreless tie in the 53rd minute and erupted for four more goals in regulation, handing the Bates College men's soccer team its first loss of the season by a 5-1 score on Saturday at Russell Street Field.
MT Tshuma and Rye Jaran scored two goals apiece for Connecticut College (1-1, 1-0 NESCAC), and Steve Yeonas assisted on the Camels' first two goals.
Owen Keleher scored the lone goal for Bates (3-1, 1-1 NESCAC), on an assist from
Justin Phillips.
The first 52 minutes of the game were evenly played, with neither side controlling the action or getting into the scoring column.
The scoreless tie was broken with 38 minutes remaining in regulation, as Yeonas made a charge up the left flank with a step on his defender and flipped a low pass to Tshuma, who redirected the ball in midair with a volley from 15 yards out, which found the right-side netting to give the Camels the lead.
The Camels doubled their lead five minutes later with another bang-bang play initiated by Yeonas. The junior defender carried a short corner kick toward the baseline and again flicked a short cross into the middle, where Alessandro Horvath-Diano was in position to head the ball down and into the goal on the bounce.
Connecticut College continued its hard play and made it 3-0 with 14:40 remaining in the game with a second score by Tshuma, who took a center pass from Alex Robles at the top of the penalty area and patiently found a shooting lane, burying a low shot inside the left post.
Bates got on the scoreboard with eight minutes left in the game to close the gap to 3-1. Junior
Justin Phillips (Old Saybrook, Conn.) took a pass from first-year
Simon Clarke (Redwood City, Calif.) at the top of the penalty area, and passed out to senior captain
Owen Keleher (Corrales, N.M.) on the outer edge of the box. With one man on him, Keleher, was able to measure and execute a looping shot that tailed under the upper right corner of the net for his fourth goal of the season.
The Camels threatened again when Bates junior goalie
Ryan Manning (Belchertown, Mass.) dived to turn away an unimpeded shot from the right side by Tshuma with under 14 minutes remaining. Manning seemed to hurt a finger or hand on the play and was replaced in goal by sophomore
Luca Antolini (Yarmouth, Maine).
A Bates foul 25 yards in front of its own goal gave the Camels an advantageous spot to shoot a direct kick, which is exactly what Jaran did, hitting a low shot around Bates' wall and bouncing inside the right post for a 4-1 lead.
The Camels struck once again in the final minute of the game, with Luke Cibelli driving along the right baseline and dishing off to Jaran for another low finish.
Connecticut College outshot Bates by a 17-13 margin, including an 8-5 difference in shots on goal.
Bates will host Eastern Nazarene in a non-conference game Tuesday at 8pm at Garcelon Field. Connecticut College will play at Colby Sunday at 1:30pm in a NESCAC game.
