Men's soccer rolls to 6-0 win at UNE

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Team captain Alec Szwarcewicz scored two first half goals and the Bates men's soccer team defeated the University of New England 6-0 Monday night at Barbara J. Hazard Field.

The Bobcats (3-0) controlled play from the onset and outshot the Nor'easters 28-1 overall and 16-1 on goal on the night.

Szwarcewicz (Newton, Mass.) scored back-to-back goals in the opening 13:09 of the game to put Bates in front early. Fellow captain Owen Keleher (Corrales, N.M.) tallied his third of the season in the 25th minute on an assist from senior captain James Peter (York, Maine) as the Bobcats led 3-0 at halftime.

Keleher found first-year Tife Agunloye (Monroe, Conn.) with a long pass to set up another goal to start the second half. First-year Sam Assantha (Manchester, N.H.) made it 5-0 with a penalty kick goal in the 69th minute. Senior Ciaran Bardong (Manhasset, N.Y.) set up senior Charlie Cronin (South Portland, Maine) for a marker with just over 90 seconds left to play.

Ethan Dispoto (36:43) and Ollie Hammond (53:17) split time in net for UNE (1-4) and each made five stops.

First-year Bruce David (Pittsburgh, Pa.) had the lone save for Bates. Junior Ryan Manning (Belchertown, Mass.) played the first 45 minutes in goal to earn the win.

Bates returns to NESCAC action this Saturday when the Bobcats host No. 6 nationally ranked Connecticut College at 1:30pm on Russell Street Field.
