Men's lacrosse rallies, falls just short in 13-12 loss at Conn. College

LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates men's lacrosse team scored the final four goals of the game but fell one goal short in a 13-12 loss at Connecticut College on Saturday.

With the score tied at six and 3:36 left in the second quarter, Logan Bowdish put the Camels (3-3, 1-2 NESCAC) ahead for good with his second goal of the game. His goal was the first of three unanswered for the Camels to end the first half, making the halftime score 9-6 in favor of Connecticut College.

Gus Mazzocca put the Camels ahead 13-8 with 14:26 left in regulation. Then the Bobcats (1-3, 0-3 NESCAC) shut down the Camels for the remainder of the game. Offensively, junior Jackson Sell (Mill Valley, Calif.) went to work, almost completely taking over the game. Sell scored his first goal with 13:41 left. First-year Wil Masterson (York, Maine) got in on the act with a goal of his own before Sell scored the next two, one with 6:57 remaining and another with 6:05 on the clock. The latter goal, with an assist from junior Oliver Allen (Portsmouth, N.H.), cut the Camel lead to one.

Camel goaltender Will Rice made three key saves down the stretch to prevent Bates from getting the equalizer. Two of those saves came when Bates had an extra-man opportunity late in the fourth quarter. He finished the contest with 11 saves overall.

The Bobcats scored first on Saturday, when Masterson tallied a goal on an extra-man opportunity with 12:20 left in the first quarter. The Camels tied the game but junior Robert Purcifull (Newport Beach, Calif.) gave Bates the lead back late in the first quarter on an assist from Allen.

The Camels answered quickly, scoring four goals in less than four minutes down the stretch of the opening quarter of action to take a 5-2 lead.

Bates opened the second quarter on a 3-0 run, with sophomore Will Schinabeck (Shaker Heights, Ohio) tying the game at five with 6:32 left in the half. The teams traded goals until the Camels took the lead on Bowdish's tally, holding on to it down the stretch.

Sell led the way for Bates with a team-high three goals. He also added a ground ball and a turnover. Senior Jack Vinci (Washington Township, N.J.) and Masterson added two goals apiece. Allen scored a goal and dished out a team-high three assists.

Gus Mazzocca and Nick Farnham paced the Camels with three goals each. Jared Rainville added a goal and a game-high four assists.

Toby Almeida was the MVP of the game for Conn. College, winning 23-27 faceoffs and recording a game-high 20 ground balls.

Bates won the turnover battle 14-19 but simply could not win faceoffs, winning just 5 of 28 overall.

First-year Spencer Wood (Los Altos Hills, Calif.) played all 60 minutes in goal for the first time in his young career, tallying 11 saves for a career-best .458 save percentage.

This game marks the final regular season contest currently on the men's lacrosse team's schedule in the abbreviated 2021 campaign.
